When planning a trip to Lespignan, you can choose to focus on nature, hiking or historic buildings. At the Étang de la Matte, the focus is on the landscape and birdwatching; the trails also take in archaeology and scenic views. The churches and chapels, in turn, offer insights into the town’s architectural history. These themes can help you plan your trip around your own interests.

Circular Trails and Hikes

In January 2024, the IDANH offered three easy circular trails starting at Parc des Buissonnets. The offer at the time was open to everyone, including residents, tourists, interested visitors and school groups. The routes combined visits to archaeological sites with 3D reconstructions and animations, as well as the discovery of ecosystems and biodiversity. These trails brought cultural history and nature together.

On 8 June 2024, the Baladons Patrimoine nature and heritage walk covered eight kilometres, linking a restored mill with the Roman archaeological site of Vivios. The programme included a tasting of local wines. The Moulin Mauriçou was partly restored by the Les Amis de Lespignan association.

The route options for the Tour de Lespignan described for 2025 included five distances: 3, 4.5, 6, 12 and 20 kilometres. The route described passed through the streets of Lespignan and along trails on the surrounding hills. From there, views extended to the Étang de Vendres and the sea horizon. The five distances offer a concrete comparison of the route lengths; the course and format may change at later editions. If you are planning your trip around an edition, check its specific details and dates.

Étang de la Matte and Birdlife

The Étang de la Matte is the last surviving remnant of a former lagoon into which the old course of the Aude flowed. It offers vantage points for observing birds and the landscape. Migratory birds make use of the sunny landscape and wide-open spaces between the old course of the Aude and the Étang. If you want to make nature the focus of your trip, this offers a different emphasis from the hikes described: rather than a set route, the focus is on observing the landscape and birdlife.

Chapels, Churches and Historic Sites

The Chapelle du Cimetière is listed in France’s supplementary inventory of historic monuments. Its single-nave hall has three bays, along with a stone-vaulted choir and a five-sided apse. The layout can be understood from these structural features: the nave forms the main single space, while the choir and apse further define the building. These architectural features give the chapel a distinctive character among the town’s historic buildings.

At the Église Saint-Pierre in the cemetery east of the village, the choir and apse are protected as historic monuments: the choir was listed on 27 May 1952, and the apse on 6 January 1988. The parish church of Saint-Pierre-aux-Liens is a Gothic building with a stone vault; it is thought to date from the 13th or 14th century. The remains of part of a Gallo-Roman villa are also protected. The site was classified by decree on 25 January 1971.

A visit to the Moulin Fabregat is possible under certain conditions and with advance reservation. Confirm that a visit is possible beforehand if you would like to include the site in your trip plans. This distinguishes the visit as a separate activity from the hikes and the landscape and architectural sites described as freely accessible.

Planning Your Trip

When looking for a hotel in Lespignan, you can first consider what you want to focus on during your stay: bird and landscape watching at the Étang de la Matte, the route options for the hikes described, or sacred and Gallo-Roman history. For specific event editions, it is worth checking the relevant dates; for the Moulin Fabregat, confirm in advance whether a visit is possible. This lets you plan your trip around the activities and places that genuinely interest you.
