Discover Lattes: Birdwatching, Harbour and Lattara
Accommodation in Lattes
Lattes can be explored from several distinct perspectives: birdwatching along the Sentier des Tamaris, the history of Lattara, the navigable Port Ariane harbour, and horse-riding activities and summer events at Domaine de Fangouse. To help decide on your trip, start by choosing your main focus. Nature watching, archaeological history, boating and events appeal to different interests and offer specific themes to guide your choice of destination.
Birdwatching along the Sentier des Tamaris
The Sentier des Tamaris trail has walkways over the water and birdwatching spots. Both the route over the water and the opportunity to watch birds are distinctive features of this trail. If nature watching is important to your trip, this gives you a clearly defined point of interest. This focus differs from Lattara’s archaeological history and Port Ariane’s connection with the harbour.
Lattara: the ancient harbour and its history
The ancient harbour of Lattara was located on the edge of the lagoon in the Lez delta. It was in use from the 6th century BC to the 3rd century AD and was an important centre for economic and cultural exchange among the peoples of the western Mediterranean. Both its long history and its role as a place of exchange are important to understanding its historical context.
The archaeological importance of the site is also formally recognised: the archaeological site of Lattara was listed as a historic monument by decree on 28 February 2003. Since 17 September 2003, the Site archéologique Lattara – musée Henri Prades has held the designation “Musée de France”. These two specific dates refer to different classifications of the archaeological site.
Port Ariane: a navigable harbour on the Lez
Port Ariane is a navigable freshwater harbour on the Lez. It has 100 moorings, including five visitor moorings, and a lock providing access to the harbour. The figures help put the available moorings into perspective: five of the 100 in total are for visitors. If you plan to go boating during your trip, check the capacity and navigation conditions locally.
Horse-riding activities and summer evenings at Domaine de Fangouse
Domaine de Fangouse – Manade Michel Robert offers a range of horse-riding activities. These may require advance arrangements, so check before your visit what arrangements are needed for your plans. The Domaine also hosts two types of public outdoor events in summer: evenings with tapas and music groups on Tuesdays, and evenings featuring Camargue traditions on Thursdays. The events therefore differ in both theme and day of the week. If one of these evenings is a deciding factor for your trip, check the event dates that apply to your stay.
Planning your trip around interests and timing
When planning your schedule, it is important to distinguish between the summer evenings and the historical attractions: the events are specifically tied to summer and to Tuesdays and Thursdays, while Lattara’s history spans many centuries. Plan around the events as a scheduling matter. If you are planning to go boating, include capacity and navigation conditions in your preparations.
