Church architecture, art throughout the village, gardens and trails give Nézignan-L'evêque its distinctive character. The Église Sainte-Marie-Madeleine represents Romanesque architecture, the Parcours artistique features a variety of art techniques, and the Caminières are paths between gardens and vineyards. Two botanical gardens each have their own focus, too. If you’re looking for a hotel for your stay, these features can help you decide whether the village suits your plans.

Church, Chapel and Historic Water

The Église Sainte-Marie-Madeleine is a Romanesque church; its original structure may date from the 12th century. Since 23 April 1953, the portal, including its carved wooden door, has been listed as a Monument historique. The protected status therefore applies to this element, not to the entire church as a whole.

The Musée d’Art Sacré et d’Histoire is located in the chapel beside the church and displays religious objects in summer. As this exhibition is seasonal, check visiting arrangements for your chosen dates before travelling. Another historic landmark is the Fontaine vieille, built in 1621 and associated with washhouses.

Art Throughout the Village and Along the Route

The Parcours artistique starts at Espace Papanou, continues to the observatory and around the Château, then goes to the media library and school, and ends behind the town hall. As the route may change locally, check the latest route description before setting out. The techniques on display include brush painting, aerosol art, chalk sketches, direct drawing, and the use of colour and tone-on-tone design. Individual works of art may change.

Art can also be found in other named features throughout the village. A mural by the artist Noon is on the disused water tower in the village centre. Zeklo created a portrait on the wall of the former livestock watering trough around the Château. These features offer a different experience from the route: here, the focus is on individual works on specific structures, while the route takes visitors past a series of art stops.

One sporting option is the Parcours santé beside the skatepark. Its features include a balance seesaw, an obstacle area and a slalom, as well as stations for abdominal and push-up exercises and a wall bars. This means you can plan around the artistic route and the sports facilities as different points of interest.

Figs, Plants and Vineyard Trails

The Arboretum du figuier has more than 80 varieties of fig tree. The jardin botanique méditerranéen features 150 varieties of trees and shrubs. Together, they offer two distinct botanical themes: a specialised fig collection and a broader collection of trees and shrubs.

The fig tree is also the focus of the Fête des Aoûtiales: the Confrérie des Becos Figos celebrates it alongside regional products and wines. Check the event dates before your trip if you’d like to include this occasion in your plans.

The Caminières are paved paths lined by high walls that lead to vegetable gardens and vineyards. Mazets and Grangeots, along with numerous stone or wrought-iron crosses, can be found along the paths. Other routes radiate through the vineyards, passing such crosses and buildings. Mazets and Grangeots served as tool sheds and shelters for winegrowers. To help you find your way, the paths have distinct features: the Caminières stand out for their paving and high walls, while the radial paths run through the vineyards.
