Roqueredonde: Landscape, Culture and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Roqueredonde
Roqueredonde is located on the Escandorgue basalt plateau, at an altitude of between 450 and 850 metres. If you are looking for a hotel for a trip here, you can first decide what you want your stay to focus on: the landscape, a historic or religious site, or a hiking route. These points of interest have different geographical and practical connections and can be planned separately before your trip.
Altitude and landscape
The area of Roqueredonde is bordered by the Orb and its tributaries. Part of the wooded landscape lies within the Haut-Languedoc Regional Natural Park. Together, these provide different reference points: the basalt plateau as a geographical setting, the rivers as boundaries of the area, and the fact that part of the wooded landscape is within the natural park. This last connection applies to part of the wooded landscape, not the entire area as a whole. If you are looking for a place with altitude, woodland and river boundaries, these features help convey the character of Roqueredonde.
Chapel and temple
The parish church of Notre-Dame-des-Neiges in Mas de Mourié is now a chapel and was probably built in 1690. The date is an estimate; its current designation as a chapel is a separate fact. Those interested in historic religious buildings can consider both the probable construction date and the building’s present status.
Lérab Ling is a Tibetan place of prayer and retreat. Its architecture is inspired by Tibetan monasteries in the Himalayas, and Lérab Ling is home to a seven-metre-high Buddha statue. Here, the focus is on religious purpose and architectural inspiration, unlike the chapel’s probable construction date.
Guided temple tours at Lérab Ling are offered on Sunday afternoons and on certain public holidays. Check the site’s calendar before travelling if you plan to take a tour. The programme includes a presentation of the temple and a film about its history and purpose. Visitors can also explore the esplanade around the temple independently.
Hiking routes with different points of interest
Route Passa Meridia No. 10 crosses the Escandorgue and continues as far as the village of Roqueredonde. The Roqueredonde–Le plateau de l’Escandorgue hiking route passes through a state forest and includes the Buddhist temple of Lérab Ling as part of the route. Check the conditions for this route before setting out. Near the Buddhist temple of Engayresque, a route leads to the Roqueredonde stopover accommodation. This provides different reference points for planning: the village as a destination, a state forest as part of the route, and the proximity of a temple to the stopover accommodation.
La Borie Noble and a time-specific offering
La Borie Noble is identified in Roqueredonde as a community of non-violent people and was founded in 1963. In the surrounding area, La Borie Noble sells bread, pastries and pizzas made with its own products on Saturdays after 1 p.m. The day and time of the sale may change; check before visiting if you plan to take advantage of this offering.
