Berlou: Vineyards, Trails and Local History
Accommodation in Berlou
Berlou lies in the Rieuberlou valley, among slate slopes where grapevines have grown since ancient times. The village is in the Parc naturel régional du Haut-Languedoc and brings together a history of winegrowing, nature, hiking trails and traces of the past. If you are looking for a hotel in Berlou, you can first consider whether wine, scenery or history will shape your stay the most.
Winegrowing and Terroir
Part of the Saint-Chinian appellation has been classified as Saint-Chinian-Berlou since 2004. Les Coteaux de Berlou offers cellar and vineyard tours by appointment. Free guided wine tastings are also available, and winegrower walks are organised throughout the year. Each activity has a different focus: a tour centres on the cellar or vineyard, a tasting on the wine, and a winegrower walk on the experience of being out and about. Tours require an appointment. Before your visit, also check the dates and availability of tastings and walks.
Berlou’s four orientation panels explain the local terroirs, geology, Mediterranean flora, landscapes and village history. On the same hill is a botanical educational trail created by schoolchildren from Berlou. This lets you explore both the topics covered by the panels and a botanical trail in one place. As part of your planning, check the condition of the trail on site.
Two Routes, Different Highlights
The Le Roc de la Viste walk offers 360° panoramic views of the foothills of the Massif Central, Berlou’s vineyards and the village. The route also passes the Cascade de la Mouline on the Rieu Berlou. If you plan to walk the section by the water, take the local access conditions into account.
The OENORANDO® Le Mas Blanc route has a different focus: it leads through the village and vineyards to the producers. Four geocaches are scattered along the route. The routes therefore differ in specific ways: Le Roc de la Viste combines panoramic views and a waterfall, while Le Mas Blanc features the village, vineyards, producers and geocaches. This comparison can help you choose a route based on the subjects that interest you, without assuming a walking time or difficulty level.
Fossils and Local History
La Maison du Cambrien is a palaeontological museum in Berlou. It focuses on local Palaeozoic fossils, including trilobites from the Montagne Noire found in the area around Berlou. The museum offers a guided tour led by the collector and discoverer. Check the current visitor arrangements before your visit.
Saint-Michel Church dates from 1900. It preserves a Romanesque sacristy and two bells from 1666 and 1730. The church thus brings together several historical points of interest: its construction date, the Romanesque sacristy and bells whose dates are much earlier. Along with the museum’s fossils, the church offers a different perspective on Berlou from its vineyards and routes.
