Village Layout and Historic Buildings

The fortified village of Causses-et-Veyran forms a crescent north of the fortifications around the castle chapel. Within the fortifications, houses lean against the surrounding wall, while others span the streets with archways. The arrangement of the houses, wall and chapel gives the fortified village its distinctive spatial character.

The “Deux piles” consist of cylindrical structures that once probably supported an aqueduct. It is thought to have carried water from a spring on the western slope of a hill to an ancient villa in Veyran. The “Deux piles” have been listed as a Monument historique under a decree dated 30 July 1963. The shape of the structures and the aqueduct’s possible function should be distinguished: the former water supply remains a hypothesis.
