Local History and Culture

At the beginning of the 20th century, Château de Lignan-sur-Orb became a large wine-growing and horticultural estate. Église Saint Vincent was initially the chapel of the château, which had been the property of the Bishop of Béziers since 977. The chapel was rebuilt in the 12th century, during the Romanesque period; the church has had its present appearance since the 17th century. These milestones distinguish the château’s long history from the church’s later building phases.

The church houses a silver pyxis, classified as a protected object on 28 March 1955. Médiathèque Albertine Sarrazin hosts exhibitions, workshops, other activities and performances; dates may vary. The “tartugo” is also part of local culture: it is the totem animal of Lignan-Sur-Orb.

Market and Local Events

Marché de Lignan-Sur-Orb offers fruit, vegetables, local wines and beers, cheese, fish and stalls selling prepared food. On the first Sunday of each month, the market is expanded to include crafts, clothing and a convivial area for meeting, exchanging ideas and sampling the products on offer. The market day and selection may vary depending on the date and vendors; check these details when planning your visit.

For the 2026 edition of the “Samedis du vin” event series, an evening featuring local wine, regional products and music was scheduled for 9 May at Place de la Vierge. This is a dated programme item, not a statement about future dates. If you would like to plan your stay around an event, check the specific announcements for your travel dates.
