Rhine-Hunsrück: Landscapes, hiking trails and culture
Accommodation in Rhine-Hunsrück
The Rhine-Hunsrück district covers extensive areas of the Hunsrück in the Rhenish Slate Mountains, as well as the part of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley on the left bank of the Rhine. Its landscape includes large parts of the Hunsrück plateau and quartzite ridges to the south, such as the Soonwald; in the Middle Rhine Valley, the Rhine also forms the district’s eastern boundary. Hiking trails, cycling routes and cultural attractions offer different ways to shape your travel plans.
Hiking trails and the Geierlay suspension bridge
The Rhine-Hunsrück district has numerous hiking trails, including the certified premium hiking trail Soonwaldsteig. The Saar-Hunsrück-Steig crosses the Hunsrück, passing through Kastellaun and continuing to the Rhine at Boppard. It is 410 kilometres long in total, divided into 27 stages. The Geierlay suspension bridge offers a different scale of excursion: it lies between Mörsdorf and Sosberg, is 360 metres long and stands 100 metres high. Several circular trails, ranging from 3 to 14 kilometres, run around the bridge. The visitor centre in Mörsdorf serves as the starting and finishing point. One specifically named option is the 6.6-kilometre Traumschleife Geierlay, which has a moderate difficulty level. This gives you a choice between a multi-stage route and a single hike described by its length and difficulty. Before setting out on a specific hike, check the route and current trail conditions.
Cycling through the Hunsrück and along the Rhine
Extensive, well-maintained and signposted cycle paths run along the Rhine and through the Hunsrück. In the 2026 season, RadBus route 629, the RadBus Hunsrück-Mosel, supports cycling trips on two named routes: the Schinderhannes cycle path between Kastellaun and Emmelshausen, and the Schinderhannes-Untermosel cycle path between Emmelshausen and the Moselle. If you plan to use the RadBus, it is worth checking the 2026 season timetable. When choosing a tour, you can also consider whether you would rather focus on a cycling route along the Rhine or a route through the Hunsrück.
Museum and architectural history
The House of Regional History in Kastellaun presents the region’s development from the Middle Ages to the Cold War. Themed exhibitions, information panels and original documents bring historical topics to life. From 25 April 2026, the museum is open Thursdays and Fridays from 12 noon to 5 p.m., and Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Check the opening hours again before your visit.
In Boppard, the Electoral Castle is a medieval fortification situated directly on the banks of the Rhine. The Upper Middle Rhine Valley also gives the district a strong cultural connection: parts of the Hunsrück-Mittelrhein collective municipality and the town of Boppard in the Rhine-Hunsrück district are part of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley UNESCO World Heritage Site, which was recognised in 2002. Kastellaun and Boppard therefore offer different points of historical interest: the museum explores the region’s development across several eras, while Boppard is home to a medieval riverside fortification.
Regional specialities
The culinary highlights of the Rhine-Hunsrück district include regional specialities and Middle Rhine wine from high-quality vineyards. Regional cuisine adds another focus to your travel plans alongside the hiking trails and cultural attractions.
