Schlierschied combines historic village architecture with the wooded Lützelsoon: several restored half-timbered houses can be seen in the village, and the Protestant church dates from 1882/84. The landscape around the village contains numerous prehistoric and early historic graves; Womrather Höhe reaches an elevation of 597 metres. These features can help you get your bearings as you plan a trip to Schlierschied and choose a hotel based on your interests in local history and the landscape.

Church, Half-Timbered Houses and Mill Complex

The Protestant church is a plastered rubble-stone building with sandstone elements. Its construction in 1882/84 provides a specific point of reference for the village’s architecture. Several restored half-timbered houses add to the village’s built character. The church and the half-timbered houses offer contrasting architectural styles that can be viewed side by side when exploring the village.

Listed cultural monuments in Schlierschied include the Protestant church on Kirchweg and a former 19th-century half-timbered forester’s house at In der Struth 19. The Anzenfeldermühle lies east of Schlierschied, near the B421. Its mill complex includes a 19th-century half-timbered residential building and a former oil mill. The forester’s house and the mill buildings add further specific examples of historic buildings to the church and the half-timbered houses visible in the village.

Woodland and Early History

The wooded Lützelsoon around Schlierschied contains numerous prehistoric and early historic graves. Womrather Höhe reaches an elevation of 597 metres there. In addition to the village’s buildings, archaeological evidence and a notable elevation provide further points of reference for understanding the landscape. Those interested in local history can distinguish between the visible village architecture and traces of earlier times in the Lützelsoon.

Regional Orientation in the Rhein-Hunsrück Region

The wider travel destination of Rhein-Hunsrück includes a district that covers large parts of the Hunsrück, itself part of the Rhenish Massif, as well as the part of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley on the left bank of the Rhine. The district also includes large parts of the Hunsrück plateau and adjoining quartzite ridges to the south, such as the Soonwald. In the Middle Rhine Valley area, the Rhine also forms the district’s eastern boundary. This information describes the landscape of the Rhein-Hunsrück district and places Schlierschied’s local features in a wider regional context.

Parts of the Hunsrück-Mittelrhein municipal association and parts of the town of Boppard in the Rhein-Hunsrück district are included in the Upper Middle Rhine Valley UNESCO World Heritage Site, which was designated in 2002. Boppard is home to the Electoral Castle, a medieval fortification directly on the banks of the Rhine. The Museum of Regional History in Kastellaun explores the region’s development from the Middle Ages to the Cold War; thematic exhibitions, information panels and original documents present its subject matter. From 25 April 2026, the museum will be open Thursdays and Fridays from 12 noon to 5 pm, and Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from 11 am to 5 pm. Check the opening hours before your visit.
