Ney – Village Square and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Ney
Get to know Ney through its local history and hikes through forests and valleys. The wider Rhein-Hunsrück area broadens the picture to include the Middle Rhine landscape and regional hiking and cycling routes. When planning your trip, Ney’s local points of interest and destinations in the surrounding area are both worth exploring.
Local History at the Village Square
The Wendelinus Chapel at the village square is a focal point of the community. Ney was first mentioned in 1225 in the will of the knight Simon von Schönecken. The year marks its first recorded mention, not a documented founding date. This brings together a specific local landmark and a precisely dated historical reference.
Hikes, Mills and Valleys
Hikes through Ney’s forests and valleys offer opportunities to stop for refreshments and stay overnight. Schönecker Mill and Hieren Mill are located in the Ehrbach Valley; the valley’s gorge leads in the direction of the Moselle. The Schönecker Stahlbrunnen, known for its iron-rich water, is another distinctive feature. The Baybach Valley can also be explored on foot in the direction of the Moselle. The valleys offer different landscapes: the Ehrbach Valley is home to mills and a gorge, while the hiking suggestion for the Baybach Valley is a walk towards the Moselle.
A hike from Schönecker Mill leads to Schöneck Castle. The castle is privately owned and can only be visited on Open Monument Day, on the second weekend in September. Check whether visits are possible before setting out. A section of the Saar-Hunsrück Trail between Morshausen and Emmelshausen runs through the Ehrbach Gorge and Preisbach Valley and passes close to the Schönecker Stahlbrunnen.
The Middle Rhine and Further Scenic Impressions
The sunny slopes of the wider Middle Rhine area offer views towards the Upper Middle Rhine Valley UNESCO World Heritage Site. The broader regional scenery also includes the Loreley Rock, a bend in the Rhine and numerous castles. River cruises in the wider area offer views of the narrow Rhine Valley, vineyards and castles. If you prefer cycling, a circular tour on the Rhine Cycle Route can be combined with the region’s many ferries.
The Wider Rhein-HunsrĂĽck Area
The Rhein-Hunsrück district encompasses large parts of the Hunsrück, part of the Rhenish Slate Mountains, as well as the section of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley on the left bank of the Rhine. Its landscape also includes large areas of the Hunsrück plateau and quartzite ridges to the south, such as the Soonwald. In the Middle Rhine Valley, the Rhine forms the district’s eastern boundary. Parts of the Hunsrück-Mittelrhein collective municipality and the town of Boppard belong to the Upper Middle Rhine Valley UNESCO World Heritage Site, which was recognized in 2002.
The district has numerous hiking trails, including the certified Soonwaldsteig premium hiking trail. The Saar-HunsrĂĽck Trail crosses the HunsrĂĽck via Kastellaun to the Rhine at Boppard and covers a total of 410 kilometers over 27 stages. The stage between Morshausen and Emmelshausen is part of this longer route; check trail conditions before planning a specific hike.
Cycling routes offer another way to explore the region: extensive, well-developed and signposted routes run along the Rhine and through the HunsrĂĽck. For the 2026 season, the RadBus route 629, the RadBus HunsrĂĽck-Mosel, supports cycling trips on the Schinderhannes Cycle Route between Kastellaun and Emmelshausen, as well as on the Schinderhannes-Untermosel Cycle Route between Emmelshausen and the Moselle. For later seasons, check the timetable then in effect; individual trail conditions may change.
The HunsrĂĽck Railway runs between Emmelshausen and Boppard along a scenic steep-gradient route. If needed, it can provide a return journey to the heights of the HunsrĂĽck. In the wider area, regional specialties are also paired with locally grown wine.
