If you are looking for a hotel in Lautzenhausen, you can first orient yourself by two features: Hahn Airport and the Hunsrück plateau. The airport is right next to Lautzenhausen; the town is 100 metres from the airport. Lautzenhausen is listed as a navigation destination in the airport’s directions. Check the directions again before travelling, as transport arrangements may change.

Location and history

Lautzenhausen is located on a plateau in the Hunsrück, which is part of the Rhenish Slate Mountains. The regional valleys of the Moselle, Rhine and Nahe rivers surround the town. The geographical setting thus brings together the elevated plateau and three major river valleys. The construction of Hahn Airport in the 1950s significantly changed Lautzenhausen. The town’s history also includes its former agricultural character; at the same time, Lautzenhausen is still considered a Hunsrück village. These historical references tell of profound change without equating the town’s former character with its present-day description.

The wider Rhein-HunsrĂĽck landscape

In the wider travel destination of Rhein-Hunsrück, the district of the same name encompasses large areas of the Hunsrück, part of the Rhenish Slate Mountains, as well as the part of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley on the left bank of the Rhine. The district’s landscape also includes extensive areas of the Hunsrück plateau and quartzite ridges to the south, such as the Soonwald. In the Middle Rhine Valley area, the Rhine also forms the district’s eastern boundary. The Rhein-Hunsrück landscape therefore combines different features: the plateau, the quartzite ridges and the Middle Rhine Valley.

Parts of the HunsrĂĽck-Mittelrhein collective municipality and the town of Boppard in the Rhein-HunsrĂĽck district are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Upper Middle Rhine Valley, which was inscribed in 2002. Boppard is also home to the Electoral Castle, a medieval fortification directly on the banks of the Rhine. These places and landscape features provide a regional cultural and historical context that extends beyond the history of Lautzenhausen itself.

Hiking and cycling in Rhein-HunsrĂĽck

The Rhein-Hunsrück district has numerous hiking trails, including the certified premium hiking trail Soonwaldsteig. The Saar-Hunsrück-Steig runs through the Hunsrück via Kastellaun to the Rhine at Boppard. It is 410 kilometres long in total and divided into 27 stages. Several circular trails run around the Geierlay Bridge between Mörsdorf and Sosberg; they are between 3 and 14 kilometres long and start and end at the visitor centre in Mörsdorf. The Geierlay Dream Loop is 6.6 kilometres long and rated as moderately difficult. The bridge itself is 360 metres long and 100 metres high. Check trail conditions before setting out on a specific route.

The cycling network is also described at the level of the Rhein-HunsrĂĽck district: extensive, well-maintained and signposted cycle paths run along the Rhine and through the HunsrĂĽck. During the 2026 season, RadBus line 629, the RadBus HunsrĂĽck-Mosel, supports cycling trips on the Schinderhannes cycle path between Kastellaun and Emmelshausen, as well as on the Schinderhannes-Untermosel cycle path between Emmelshausen and the Moselle. If you are planning to use this bus service for a trip, check the timetable that applies to your travel dates.
