Kastellaun: Castle, Forest Trails and Cycling Routes
Accommodation in Kastellaun
Kastellaun offers several distinct reasons to visit: its castle and cultural history, trails through forests and valleys, cycling, as well as leisure activities and seasonal destinations. Are you mainly interested in local history, a circular hike or a particular activity? The options vary by theme, route length and season. This lets you choose a destination that suits your plans before selecting a hotel.
Castle, History and Culture
Kastellaun Castle stands in the old town. First documented in the early 13th century, it was destroyed in 1689 and restored in the late 20th century. Today, it is used for cultural events. Its history therefore comprises clearly distinct stages: its first mention, its destruction and its later restoration.
The ARGO app lets you view the castle at its authentic location as a digital reconstruction on a smartphone or tablet. The House of Regional History in Kastellaun offers another perspective on the past. Themed exhibitions, information panels and original documents present the region’s development from the Middle Ages to the Cold War. From April 25, 2026, the museum will be open Thursdays and Fridays from 12 noon to 5 p.m., and Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Check the opening hours before your visit.
Hiking Trails Through Forests and Valleys
The Traumschleife Burgstadt-Pfad follows old post roads through the forest and leads to an outdoor classroom and a viewpoint overlooking the Hunsrück heights towards the Soonwald. The 3 Täler Weg offers a different kind of route: this 13.8-kilometer circular trail starts in the center of Kastellaun and passes through the Trimmbach, Deimerbach and Ourbach valleys. Parking is available at Altstadtpassage; an alternative starting point is Junkersmühle, which is served by bus. Since information about starting points and bus connections may change, check these details before your hike.
The Kyrill-Pfad leads through a 1.5-hectare area of storm-damaged spruce forest in the Kastellaun municipal forest and shows how the forest is regenerating. It is open year-round, except in icy or snowy conditions. The long-distance Saar-HunsrĂĽck-Steig also runs through the HunsrĂĽck, via Kastellaun, to the Rhine at Boppard, in the wider Rhein-HunsrĂĽck destination. It is 410 kilometers long in total and divided into 27 stages. This makes it easy to distinguish the 13.8-kilometer circular trail from the long-distance route, which is divided into stages.
Cycling in and Through Kastellaun
The Schinderhannes-Radweg runs along a former railway line between Emmelshausen and Simmern, passing through Kastellaun. It is 38 kilometers long and follows a corridor away from heavily trafficked roads. The HunsrĂĽck-Mosel-Radroute leads from Kastellaun towards Treis-Karden and the Moselle. The two routes therefore differ in their course and direction: the Schinderhannes-Radweg is defined by its route and connection between Emmelshausen and Simmern, while the HunsrĂĽck-Mosel route heads towards the Moselle.
Leisure Activities and Seasonal Destinations
At the Walderlebnispark, the adventure park features climbing and balancing obstacles. The barefoot path is 1.2 kilometers long and has 20 different surfaces. The activities have different focuses: climbing and balancing obstacles in one area, and varied surfaces along a path in the other.
The Lavender Labyrinth in Kastellaun offers peaceful summer strolls beside the parking lot at the cemetery. The flowering period may vary. The lakeside adventure playground is for children up to 14 years old and features a slide tower, a play castle, a zip line, sand play equipment, a water pump and swings. AQUA fit Kastellaun has a 250-square-meter water area, a one-meter diving board and a three-meter diving platform.
