Rohrbach combines local and film history with the juniper heath near Rohrbach. Protected buildings include a church on Hauptstraße and historic half-timbered buildings. The village’s first recorded mention in 1304 and the filming of Schinderhannes in 1958 add to its history. Nearby, a ruin and various hiking landscapes complement the local attractions; the wider Rhine-Hunsrück region provides its own regional context.

Village History and Film History

The Protestant church on HauptstraĂźe is an early Neoclassical hall church dating from 1791. Its surroundings are also part of the protected ensemble. The protected historic buildings also include 19th-century half-timbered houses and a half-timbered bakehouse dating from 1840. The buildings represent different time periods: the church and bakehouse are dated to specific years, while the half-timbered houses are assigned to the 19th century.

Rohrbach was first mentioned in 1304 in records from the archives of the Counts of Sponheim. Another historical reference is the film Schinderhannes: Helmut Käutner filmed it in Rohrbach in 1958, with many residents taking part. The village’s film history is thus linked both to a specific production and to the involvement of local residents.

Juniper Heath near Rohrbach

The juniper heath near Rohrbach is a nationally designated protected area and classified as a nature reserve. A conservation project in 2023 involved removing shrubs and planting new juniper cuttings. The protected-area status and this project, tied to a specific year, offer different insights into how the landscape is managed.

Ruins, Hiking Trails, and Landscapes

At the nearby Hellkirch ruin, three walls of a small building made of quarry slate, with a Gothic window opening, are still standing. The route there follows a meandering stream and winds through forest trails. Before your visit, it is worth checking current trail conditions.

A hike of several hours between Schneppenbach and Woppenroth passes through the largely undeveloped landscape of the Hahnenbach Valley. In this region steeped in history, the Schmidtburg ruin is also associated with Schinderhannes’s activities in the Hahnenbach Valley. South of Rohrbach, Woppenroth, the main filming location for the television series Heimat, is just a few minutes away.

Nearby LĂĽtzelsoon is characterized by long quartzite cliffs, with hiking trails running beneath them. The nearby Teufelsfels is a 568-meter-high quartzite spur that rises above the treetops. A lookout tower beside the rock offers views of 42 villages. Together, they offer contrasting landscapes: trails beneath the cliffs in LĂĽtzelsoon and a viewpoint at Teufelsfels.
