Stage 21 of the Saar-Hunsrück-Steig runs near Uhler from Kastellaun to Schmausemühle. It passes Uhler Kopf and Junkersmühle, then continues through the Deimerbach valley and wooded sections. On a larger scale, the Saar-Hunsrück-Steig crosses the Hunsrück via Kastellaun to the Rhine at Boppard. The entire trail covers 410 kilometres in 27 stages. This helps distinguish the specific route of Stage 21 from the scale of the long-distance trail as a whole. Temporary diversions may occur; check the route if you are planning a specific hike.
Hiking and cycling in the wider Rhein-Hunsrück travel region
The Rhein-Hunsrück district covers large areas of the Hunsrück, which is part of the Rhenish Slate Mountains, as well as the Upper Middle Rhine Valley on the left bank of the Rhine. It includes large parts of the Hunsrück plateau and the quartzite ridges to the south, such as the Soonwald. In the Middle Rhine Valley, the Rhine also forms the district’s eastern boundary.
The Rhein-Hunsrück district has numerous hiking trails, including the certified Soonwaldsteig premium hiking trail. Check the route and the current certification status before planning a specific hike. Cycling routes also run through the Hunsrück and along the Rhine; they are described as extensive, well developed and signposted. The condition of individual trails can change, so it is advisable to check the relevant route before setting out.
For the 2026 season, RadBus line 629, the RadBus Hunsrück-Mosel, supports cycling trips on the Schinderhannes cycle path between Kastellaun and Emmelshausen, as well as on the Schinderhannes-Untermosel cycle path between Emmelshausen and the Moselle. If you plan to take the bus, check the timetable for your travel date.
Culture and cuisine in the Rhein-Hunsrück district
The Museum of Regional History in Kastellaun explores the region’s development from the Middle Ages to the Cold War. Themed exhibitions, information panels and original documents bring the historical topics to life. From 25 April 2026, the museum is open Thursdays and Fridays from 12 noon to 5 pm, and Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from 11 am to 5 pm. Check the opening hours before your visit.
Within the Rhein-Hunsrück district, parts of the Hunsrück-Mittelrhein municipal association and the town of Boppard are part of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley UNESCO World Heritage Site, which was designated in 2002. The regional culinary scene includes specialities and Middle Rhine wine from high-quality vineyards. The Electoral Castle in Boppard, a medieval fortification directly on the banks of the Rhine, is also part of the region’s cultural heritage.
