Reckershausen: Cycling Routes, Nature and St. Thekla
Accommodation in Reckershausen
Reckershausen offers several different focal points for planning a trip: cycling connections, trails focused on nature and learning, the Sonnenhof riding stable, and St. Thekla Church. Cycling, nature experiences, horseback riding and a visit to the church each add their own distinctive touch.
Nature trails and excursions
The “Reckershäuser Busch” Traumschleifchen trail starts and ends at the nature playground and barefoot path. Parking is available at the barbecue hut and in the recreation area. Along the trail, information boards cover the forest’s flora and fauna, history and geology. This makes the route a way to combine exercise with several topics to discover along the way.
The Reckershausen Energy and Forest Discovery Trail is approximately three kilometres long and runs alongside the Kirchberg wind farm. Together with the nature playground and barefoot path, it is listed as an option for a family outing. If you are looking for a specific distance, you can use the trail’s approximately three kilometres as a guide; no distance is specified for the Traumschleifchen trail.
The recreation area has an e-bike charging station. It caters to school outings and kindergarten trips, as well as children’s birthday parties, barbecues and family outings. This brings together different kinds of group activities, from a trip with a school or kindergarten to a celebration or family outing.
Compare cycling connections
One variant of the Hunsrück-Mosel Cycle Route passes directly through Reckershausen, from Kirchberg to Völkenroth. Another cycling connection runs from Reckershausen over the Reckershausener Höhe and through Wüschheim and the Külzbachtal valley directly to the Schinderhannes Cycle Route. The two routes differ in that one passes through the town, while the other leads to a named cycle route.
Another cycling route runs between Emmelshausen and Simmern/HunsrĂĽck. It is 38 kilometres long, fully paved, has no inclines and follows the former route of the HunsrĂĽck Railway. These details provide specific features for comparison: distance, surface, incline and the former railway line along which it runs. This route is not identified here as the Schinderhannes Cycle Route.
St. Thekla and local history
St. Thekla Church was built between 1923 and 1925 to plans by Cologne architect Eduard Endler. Its high altar is much older: it dates from 1723 and originally came from St. Afra Monastery in Trier. The difference between the church’s construction date and the altar’s origins gives a visit a distinctive historical dimension. St. Thekla can be visited during opening hours, so plan your visit accordingly.
Reckershausen’s history extends beyond the construction history of the church. The town has historical ties to Ravengiersburg Monastery. A notable chapter in its more recent history was the women’s protest camp of 1983 against the deployment of missiles and military construction projects. Up to 2,000 women took part in the protests.
Horseback riding and the wider region
The Sonnenhof riding stable offers riding holidays during school breaks, as well as riding lessons for children and young people. So alongside cycling and nature, there is also a specific option for travellers interested in equestrian sports.
The wider Rhein-Hunsrück destination includes extensive areas of the Hunsrück, part of the Rhenish Slate Mountains, as well as the left bank of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley within the Rhein-Hunsrück district. The district’s landscape also includes parts of the Hunsrück plateau and the quartzite ridges to the south, such as the Soonwald; in the Middle Rhine Valley, the Rhine forms the district’s eastern boundary. The Saar-Hunsrück-Steig crosses the Hunsrück via Kastellaun to the Rhine at Boppard and covers a total of 410 kilometres in 27 stages. This offers another point of reference for trip planning: the approximately three-kilometre Energy and Forest Discovery Trail and a long-distance hiking trail with 27 stages represent very different walking distances.
