Discover Oberwesel: Culture on the Middle Rhine
Accommodation in Oberwesel
Oberwesel brings together church music and town history with scenic viewpoints, wine and hiking trails. When planning your visit, you can focus on different themes: the museums tell the story of life on the Rhine and the town’s history; the Schwede-Bure Tour follows the medieval town walls and combines scenic views with insights into wine country and geology.
Church Music and Town History
The Eberhardt/Klais organ in the Church of Our Lady (Liebfrauenkirche) is considered the largest organ on the Middle Rhine. It has 54 stops and 3,621 pipes, and its Baroque case has been preserved in its original form. You can hear the organ at concerts, matinées and private organ tours. As schedules may change, it is a good idea to check the latest dates before your visit.
The Oberwesel Town Museum is housed in restored rooms of a former winery. Spread over four floors, it offers a glimpse into life on the Rhine. Exhibits include a virtual journey along the Rhine and an interactive underwater world showcasing the river’s biodiversity. A miniature railway model depicts Oberwesel as it was around the 1950s. These different approaches come together: a portrayal of life along the river, a look beneath the water’s surface and a model of the town at a particular point in time.
Tower, Wine Witch and Art
At the Tower Museum, you can climb the gate tower of Schönburg Castle and enjoy views across the Rhine Valley. The tower rooms showcase more than 700 years of history. The visit combines a view from the tower with historical themes, without requiring you to add another location to your day’s itinerary.
The Oberwesel Wine Witch (Weinhex) is a cultural figure similar to a wine queen and is enthroned each year during the Walpurgis Night celebrations. The Oberwesel Cultural Centre presents historical information, as well as costumes from earlier times and goblets associated with the Wine Witch tradition. The annual celebration and the exhibits shed light on different aspects of the same tradition. The exact event programme may vary; if you plan to travel for Walpurgis Night, check the dates in advance.
At the Oberwesel Sculpture Park, modern art and historical architecture meet. The individual artworks stretch from the Rhine promenade through the vineyards towards the heights near Urbar. Another artistic attraction is the Oelsberg Art Trail: the project was created in partnership with the town of Oberwesel, the local young winemakers’ association and artists Michael Apitz and Volker Boch.
Walking between the Town Walls, the Rhine and the Vineyards
The Schwede-Bure Tour starts at Schaarplatz and follows the medieval town walls to St Martin’s Church. It reaches the Kackstuhl viewpoint, which looks out over the Rhine, and the Landsknechtsblick, from where you can see Oberwesel and the Rhine. The history along the way includes the Calvary Chapel, built in 1845 and once a destination for processions. At the Goldemund vineyard, you can learn more about Oberwesel wine.
Geology is also one of the tour’s themes: at a quarry, you can see layers of slate estimated to be 300 to 400 million years old. In Oberwesel, the landscape within the Upper Middle Rhine Valley UNESCO World Heritage Site also marks the transition from soft clay slate to hard sandstone. Alongside historic buildings and wine, the area therefore offers a tangible opportunity to take a closer look at the landscape.
Focus Areas for Your Stay
For trip planning, a simple distinction may be helpful: the Church of Our Lady and the museums focus on church music and exhibitions, while the Schwede-Bure Tour brings together town walls, scenic views, wine and geology. If you are looking for a hotel in Oberwesel, you can first consider which of these themes will shape your trip and plan the rest of your visit accordingly.
