Kirchberg (Hunsrück) combines a long history as a town with hiking and cycling. When planning a stay, two perspectives are useful: historic traces and buildings in the town, and the tour options in the Kirchberg region. The features below can help you decide whether you would like to focus mainly on the town’s history or on the region’s paths and landscapes.

History and Cultural Traces

Kirchberg has held town privileges since 1259 and is considered the oldest town in the Hunsrück. Two Roman landmarks offer different points of interest: the road station of Dumnissus was located along today’s Hauptstraße and was mentioned by Ausonius around 368 AD in his Mosella; at the western edge of town, a replica of a Roman milestone commemorates the Roman road from Bingen to Trier. St. Michael’s Catholic parish church, Kirchberg’s oldest building, brings together construction phases from two centuries: its west tower dates from the 13th century, and its nave from the 15th. A later landmark is the 36-metre-high water tower, built in 1899 and counted among Kirchberg’s defining features. The exhibition at the local history museum offers another perspective, tracing the development of the bicycle from the draisine to the modern mountain bike.

Hiking the Trail Network

Kirchberg is a starting point for hikes across an extensive trail network. For the Kirchberg region, the local tourist information centre lists seven certified premium circular trails, ranging from about five to 16 kilometres and leading through varied natural landscapes with streams, viewpoints and rock formations. The distances give an indication of how far each route is, while the landscape features described provide a sense of the natural setting. Check the conditions for your specific route before setting out.

Cycling in the Kirchberg Region

Cycling in the Kirchberg holiday region is promoted for trekking bikes, e-bikes, road bikes and gravel bikes. The cycle connections include routes within the Hunsrück-Nahe cycle region and links to the Moselle. For hiking, you can assess a tour by its length; for cycling, the type of bike and regional connections provide guidance. This lets you separate two questions when planning: What type of bike will you use, and which regional route connection interests you?

The Wider Rhein-Hunsrück Area

As a broader travel destination, the Rhein-Hunsrück district covers large areas of the Hunsrück, part of the Rhenish Slate Mountains, as well as the left-bank section of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley. The district also includes large parts of the Hunsrück plateau and the quartzite ridges to the south, such as the Soonwald. In the Middle Rhine Valley, the Rhine also forms the district’s eastern boundary.

Practical Information

The Kirchberg Tourist Information Centre can help you plan an individual stay in the Hunsrück and may assist with finding accommodation or special offers. As this service may change, it is best to check in advance what assistance is currently available. The centre also offers regional products such as homemade sausage, preserves and Hunsrücker Kräuterhannes. The products available may vary.
