Unzenberg has a rich local history: the village bell, the former viaduct and rail traffic represent different chapters. There are also specific cycling routes to help you find your way: one tour leads from Kirchberg to Unzenberg, while other routes differ considerably in length and course. If you are looking for a hotel for a stay in Unzenberg, you can consider historical interests and planned activities as separate criteria when planning your trip.

Village Bell, Viaduct and Railway Station

The central bell tower is considered the village’s landmark. Unzenberg’s history also includes six mills that were once associated with the village. The village bell weighs 95 kilograms and is tuned to F-sharp. The new bronze bell was installed in Unzenberg in April 1980; its inscription ends with “Unzenberg 1980”. Both the installation and the inscription refer to 1980, while the bell’s weight and tuning are other specific features.

Mördersbrücke is a historic landmark: the 12-metre-high stone viaduct was built from 1900 to 1903 and connected Engelsberg with the former provincial road towards Kirchberg. It was demolished on 21 October 2008 because there was an imminent risk of collapse. For many people, Mördersbrücke was a popular subject for photographs. Its significance therefore lies in the history of the former transport link and the structure, which no longer exists.

The railway’s history can also be traced through several dates. A railway station opened in Unzenberg in 1901 on the Simmern–Kirchberg line. The later station building was constructed in the 1930s and had a goods ramp. The last scheduled service on the line ran in May 1976. The station’s opening, construction of the later building and end of scheduled service therefore mark different stages in the local railway’s history.

For comparison with longer routes, the 28-kilometre LĂĽtzelsoon cycle route connects Kirchberg and Kirn, as well as the Nahe and HunsrĂĽck regions. The 155-kilometre HunsrĂĽck cycle route runs from Saarburg via Kirchberg and Simmern to Bacharach. Another option is the 38-kilometre Schinderhannes cycle route between Emmelshausen and Simmern/HunsrĂĽck. It has no climbs and runs entirely along the former HunsrĂĽck railway line; it is considered suitable for recreational cyclists, families and skaters. The selection therefore ranges from a 7-kilometre loop to a 155-kilometre regional route; route and distance offer different points of comparison for your planning.

Walking Trails in the Kirchberg Holiday Region

The Kirchberg holiday region has more than 100 kilometres of walking trails and is part of the Saar-HunsrĂĽck premium hiking region. The Kirchberg area also has educational trails: short, informative circular routes with information boards. The kilometre figure describes the regional scope of the walking offer, while the educational trails refer to a specific type of circular route. This lets you distinguish between an overview of regional walking options and shorter circular routes equipped with information boards. Check current trail conditions before setting out on a specific walk.
