Accommodation in Benzweiler
In Benzweiler, a chapel, a historic building and the traditional Hahnen-Lied offer different insights into local history and community culture.
Historical traces in Benzweiler
A chapel in Benzweiler existed from 1439 to 1707. A historic building at Hauptstraße 4 is listed as a protected monument. It has a half-hipped roof with sloping roof surfaces on the gable ends and partly exposed timber framing; it is dated to around 1820. These two historical references distinguish a chapel history spanning several centuries from a specific architectural style of the early 19th century.
The traditional Hahnen-Lied includes singing together at the end of the community day. Thus, local culture encompasses not only architectural traces but also a shared musical custom.
Rhein-Hunsrück: Landscape and Regional History
The wider travel destination of Rhein-Hunsrück includes the Rhein-Hunsrück district, which covers extensive areas of the Hunsrück as part of the Rhenish Slate Mountains, as well as the left-bank section of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley. This includes large parts of the Hunsrück plateau and the quartzite ridges to the south, such as the Soonwald; in the Middle Rhine Valley, the Rhine also forms the district’s eastern boundary. Parts of the Hunsrück-Mittelrhein collective municipality and the town of Boppard in the Rhein-Hunsrück district belong to the Upper Middle Rhine Valley UNESCO World Heritage Site, which was recognized in 2002.
The Museum Haus der regionalen Geschichte in Kastellaun presents the region’s development from the Middle Ages to the Cold War through themed exhibitions, information panels and original documents. From 25 April 2026, the museum is open Thursdays and Fridays from 12:00 to 17:00, and Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from 11:00 to 17:00. Check the opening hours again before your visit.
Hiking Trails in Rhein-Hunsrück
There are numerous hiking trails in the Rhein-Hunsrück district, including the certified Soonwaldsteig premium hiking trail. Several circular trails between 3 and 14 kilometers long run around the Geierlay suspension bridge, which lies between Mörsdorf and Sosberg and is 360 meters long and 100 meters high. The visitor center in Mörsdorf is the starting and finishing point. The Geierlay dream loop is 6.6 kilometers long and of moderate difficulty. For a specific hike, check the current route and conditions; for the Soonwaldsteig, it is also advisable to verify its certification again. The Saar-Hunsrück-Steig offers a different scale: it runs through the Hunsrück, passing through Kastellaun to the Rhine at Boppard, and covers a total of 410 kilometers in 27 stages. This means that individual circular trails and a long-distance trail with a much greater overall length offer different hiking options in the region. There are also extensive, well-developed and signposted cycling routes in the Rhein-Hunsrück district, running along the Rhine and through the Hunsrück.
