Discover Dillendorf
Accommodation in Dillendorf
Dillendorf can be explored through two specific themes: hiking and archaeological history. The historic Ausonius Road runs through the municipality and is designated as a hiking trail. Nearby, in the Brauschied State Forest, there is a group of Celtic burial mounds associated with the Dillendorf area. The locations are distinct: the route runs through the municipality, while the burial mounds are in the nearby state forest.
The Rhine-HunsrĂĽck as a Scenic Setting
As a broader travel destination, the Rhine-Hunsrück district encompasses large areas of the Hunsrück, part of the Rhenish Slate Mountains, as well as areas on the left bank of the Rhine in the Upper Middle Rhine Valley. The district also includes large parts of the Hunsrück plateau and quartzite ridges to the south, such as the Soonwald. In the Middle Rhine Valley area, the Rhine also forms the district’s eastern boundary. These landscape features convey a sense of the diversity of the broader destination without attributing them to Dillendorf alone.
Hiking and Cycling in the Rhine-HunsrĂĽck District
The Rhine-Hunsrück district has numerous hiking trails, including the certified Soonwaldsteig premium hiking trail. Check the certification and route again before setting out on a specific hike. The Saar-Hunsrück-Steig crosses the Hunsrück via Kastellaun and reaches the Rhine at Boppard. The full route covers 410 kilometers in 27 stages—a useful reference when planning a longer hike.
Cyclists will also find extensive, well-maintained and signposted cycle paths in the Rhine-HunsrĂĽck district, along the Rhine and through the HunsrĂĽck. For the 2026 season, RadBus line 629, the RadBus HunsrĂĽck-Mosel, supports cycling trips on the Schinderhannes Cycle Path between Kastellaun and Emmelshausen, as well as on the Schinderhannes Untermosel Cycle Path between Emmelshausen and the Moselle. Check the timetable before your trip; timetables for future seasons may differ.
Culture and Hiking Routes in the Broader Destination
The Museum Haus der regionalen Geschichte in Kastellaun presents the region’s development from the Middle Ages to the Cold War. The historical topics are explored through themed exhibitions, information panels and original documents. From April 25, 2026, the museum is open Thursdays and Fridays from 12 noon to 5 p.m., and Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Check opening hours before visiting.
The Geierlay suspension bridge lies between Mörsdorf and Sosberg. It is 360 meters long and 100 meters high. Several circular trails, ranging from 3 to 14 kilometers, run in the area around the bridge; the visitor center in Mörsdorf is both the starting point and the endpoint. The Geierlay Dream Loop is 6.6 kilometers long and has a moderate difficulty level. This regional route overview offers a range of trail lengths for reference. Conditions on individual trails may change; check before setting out on a specific hike.
There is also a regional culinary offering: the Rhine-HunsrĂĽck district highlights regional specialties and Middle Rhine wines from high-quality vineyards.
