Olomouc District: Caves, Culture and Nature
Accommodation in Olomouc District
In Olomouc District, experiences range from caves and gardens to historical collections and outdoor activities. To plan your stay, you can first consider which aspect of the region interests you most: nature, history or activity. The specific places and their different highlights can help you choose the right base for your trip.
Nature Trails, Caves and Plant Diversity
The Luhy Litovelského Pomoraví educational cycle route starts in Horka nad Moravou and runs for 17 kilometres along paved forest paths. Also in Horka nad Moravou, Sluňákov combines an open-air art gallery with a nature area that serves as a gateway to Litovelské Pomoraví. Most areas of the Sluňákov grounds are freely accessible. If you want to visit a specific facility, check its status in advance.
Underground, the Javoříčko Caves feature passages and stalactite halls, nearly 800 metres of which are open to the public. Seasonal opening conditions may change, so it is advisable to check visiting hours before your trip. The Mladeč Caves have a different focus: they are an important archaeological and palaeontological site. Finds include prehistoric human and animal bones as well as stone tools. A cave visit featuring stalactite formations and a glimpse of early human and animal remains thus offer two distinct nature and history experiences.
The Bílá Lhota Arboretum covers almost three hectares and is home to hundreds of tree species, including Japanese maples, alpine plants and aquatic plants. Anyone interested in plants will find a clear contrast here to the underground landscapes of the caves. Těšíkovská kyselka is an iron-rich mineral spring; its surroundings serve as a starting point for hiking trails in the foothills of the Nízký Jeseník.
Castles, Collections and Pilgrimage Traditions
The interiors of Bouzov Castle are furnished with paintings, works of art, historic furniture and specially made furnishings. On ceremonial occasions, visitors can also see two working drawbridges and a portcullis. The dates of these occasions vary according to the calendar, so it is advisable to check them before your visit.
The Hanácké Museum in Příkazy preserves a well-maintained Haná complex of clay buildings, with orchards, three traditional barns and a replica. Fort XVII in Křelov has a permanent exhibition on the history of Olomouc’s fortifications and also includes a military collection. The two places present history in different ways: one through a traditional complex of buildings, the other through the fortifications of Olomouc.
Svatý Kopeček is a traditional pilgrimage site, centred on the Basilica of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary. The Svatokopecké Museum presents an exhibition on the history and present-day life of the pilgrimage site. This allows visitors to explore the religious tradition both through its central church building and its historical development.
Activities and Seasonal Offerings
Park sportu Hrubá Voda offers a summer toboggan run, a treetop walkway, horse rides, disc golf, mini golf, archery and an underground labyrinth in a slate mine. Individual facilities may change; check the current status if you want to plan a specific activity. The Veverák rope park at Svatý Kopeček has 47 obstacles across three routes. Its facilities may also change.
Fun park Hlubočky offers a 1,536-metre course, archery and other activities. In winter, three ski slopes, a ski school and a toboggan and bobsleigh run are added. As seasonal offerings should be checked before travelling, it is advisable to check the latest conditions. Sportovní areál Sobáčov lies on the Litovel–Bouzov cycle route. Its facilities include sport fishing, a restaurant, camping cabins, beach volleyball and an open-air smokehouse; these facilities may also change.
Olomouc as a Point of Reference
At Olomouc Zoo, extensive saltwater aquariums display sharks, piranhas and coral fish. An observation tower offers views of Olomouc and a large part of Moravia. The seven-kilometre educational trail through the forests of Svatý Kopeček starts near the zoo and complements the animal and viewpoint attractions with a route through the forest.
Olomouc is an important railway hub; the main railway station is close to the city centre. The city is served by fast trains, InterCity, EuroCity and regional trains. Trams and buses play the main role in the urban transport network. Train connections and local transport timetables may change, so check your connection before departure.
