Moravský Beroun offers two distinct focal points for planning your trip: the town’s architectural history and Křížový vrch with its park and nature trail. Churches, a permanent historical exhibition and traces of a castle invite you to explore the town’s history. The nature trail adds topics relating to nature, architectural and artistic sights, and views of the peaks of Hrubý Jeseník. When looking for a hotel, you can consider whether your trip will focus mainly on cultural history or on walks and scenery.

Churches and history in Moravský Beroun

The parish church of Nanebevzetí Panny Marie was built between 1606 and 1610 in the Renaissance style. In the 1840s, it was remodelled in the late Empire style. This gives it two distinct points of reference in architectural history: the early 17th-century Renaissance building and its later remodelling. The church Kostel Povýšení svatého Kříže dates from 1754. Its present appearance is based on the plans of master builder Mikuláš Thalherr from Fulnek.

Kostel Povýšení svatého Kříže also serves as a venue for exhibitions and concerts. The programme may change. The permanent exhibition “Historie Moravského Berouna” is located in the tourist information centre and has been installed since 1 June 2021. Check visiting arrangements before your visit.

Křížový vrch: Park, history and nature

Křížový vrch is in Moravský Beroun, on a five-hectare park site. The remains of Šternberků Castle, dating from 1339, are preserved there. Also on Křížový vrch stands the Baroque pilgrimage chapel of Panny Marie Bolestné; its foundation stone was laid on 16 July 1752. The castle remains and chapel point to different historical periods—from the remains of a castle to a Baroque religious building.

Common and rare tree species grow in the park. Křížový vrch thus combines a park landscape with architectural and historical sights at this location.

Nature trail and circular route

The Křížový a Kočičí vrch circular route starts at the bus station in Moravský Beroun; the nature trail is intended for hiking. It offers insights into the fauna and flora of the town park and the surrounding countryside. You will also find information about architectural and artistic sights in Moravský Beroun and its surroundings. The views described include peaks of Hrubý Jeseník, including Praděd.

There is a covered seating area with a fire pit on the nature trail in an old quarry. Five additional covered stations are equipped with benches. Check access arrangements for the circular route before setting out; facilities along the nature trail may change. This lets you consider the town’s historical highlights and the nature trail’s themes separately when planning your trip, without treating the two visitor interests as equivalent.
