Hnojice: Haná history, fair days and a cycling route
Accommodation in Hnojice
Hnojice is a typical municipality in the fertile Haná region. Sacred and historical landmarks stand alongside a named cycling route in the village. If you are planning a stay, you can focus on local history, the annual festival date or cycling. For orientation, road II/447 connects Hnojice with the neighbouring villages of Lužice and Žerotín.
Village character and historical traces
The village centre has the shape of a closed ellipse, known as an old Slavic *okrouhlice*. The layout of the centre itself is therefore part of the village’s history. An archaeological find reaches back into the past: a Lusatian cremation grave found in Hnojice is classified as a Slavic archaeological find from the 6th century.
The present-day Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary was built between 1806 and 1812, after the previous church was destroyed by fire. The statue of Saint John of Nepomuk stands in the park beside the church. It bears the signature of 1732 and comes from the workshop of Jiří Antonín Heinz, a master craftsman from Uničov. The church, rebuilt after a fire, and the signed statue stand as distinct historical landmarks.
At the southeastern edge of the village, on a bend in the road to Lužice, stands the Chapel of Saint Florian. It is a work of Haná Baroque dating from 1701. The Hnojice reconciliation cross is at the crossroads of the roads to Šternberk and Moravská Huzová; it is the only and oldest monument of its kind in the municipality. The Calvary cross bears a Latin commemorative inscription from 1817. The dates refer to different details: 1701 is the chapel’s date, while 1817 is the date of the inscription on the cross.
Haná fair days and cycling
The traditional Haná fair days take place every year in August, on the second Saturday and Sunday after the feast of Saint Lawrence. The exact calendar dates vary from year to year, so check the date if you are planning your stay around the event. The festivities include entertainment events, various exhibitions and performances by ensembles from the Hagnózek civic association of Hnojice. The annual programme may vary.
The “Za krásami přírody” cycling route passes through Hnojice and forms a 42-kilometre circuit starting from Šternberk. It is mostly flat, with little elevation gain, and suitable for all age groups. Check the route conditions before setting off, as the surface condition in particular can change. Hnojice also makes a suitable stop for cyclists travelling from Olomouc or Litovel via Šternberk towards the Nízký Jeseník mountains.
The two cycling options help with different kinds of planning: the circuit is clearly defined by its length and route, while the stopover describes Hnojice’s role on a ride towards the Nízký Jeseník mountains. Together with the fair days, which are tied to a calendar date, they offer different reasons to stay. If you are looking for a hotel in Hnojice, the reason for your trip can help you choose when to visit.
