Discover Mutkov: Forests, Cycling Routes and History
Accommodation in Mutkov
Mutkov brings together natural, sporting and historical themes. Most of the area is forested, two named cycling routes pass through the village, and a shorter singletrack trail leads to Mutkov. The Chapel of Panny Marie and the remains of a medieval castle site add specific historical points of interest. For planning your trip, it is worth considering these aspects separately: the landscape and cycling routes offer a sense of the character of the surrounding area, while the history of the buildings and village offers a different way to discover Mutkov.
Forests and Landscape
Most of the area around Mutkov is covered by mixed and coniferous forests. The landscape is also relatively varied and hilly. The forests and the terrain describe different aspects of the scenery. If you want to consider both a wooded setting and a varied landscape when choosing a destination, Mutkov offers a specific point of reference. You can then consider the cycling routes in terms of their individual characteristics.
Cycling in Mutkov
The marked KČT cycling route 6105 passes through Mutkov. The “Do hlubin věků” cycling route also runs through the village; it is 30 kilometres long, suited to more experienced cyclists, and follows both paved roads and unpaved forest tracks. This means you can weigh up the route’s length, difficulty and surfaces together. If you are planning a cycling trip, these features are more informative than distance alone, since suitability and changes in surface are also part of the route description.
A shorter singletrack trail runs through the forest to Mutkov. Its forest setting and shorter length are its defining features; “Do hlubin věků”, by contrast, can be assessed by its 30-kilometre length, suitability for more experienced cyclists and surface. These differences offer a practical comparison if cycling is a focus of your trip and you want to take the type of route into account when choosing a destination.
Chapel and Castle-Site Remains
Among Mutkov’s historic monuments is the Chapel of Panny Marie. It is a masonry structure with a rectangular floor plan and a semicircular end. The floor plan describes the building’s shape as seen from above; the semicircular end indicates the design of one end of the building. Together, the monument’s status and its specific architectural features make it a clear point of interest for anyone interested in local architectural history. The chapel is therefore one aspect of Mutkov’s cultural history.
Another historical point of interest is the remains of Mutkov’s medieval castle site. It is thought to be a precursor to Sovinec Castle; this is therefore a probable historical interpretation. There is no easy path to the castle-site remains. Bear this in mind if you include the site in your visit plans.
Local History and Connections
Mutkov was first mentioned in 1320 under the name Muchochov, also known as Molkov. Historically, Mutkov hosted the “Mutkoš” cross-country skiing race. It was held for a fifth time; a trial run had already taken place in 2001. The historical references thus span the village’s first recorded mention and the history of cross-country skiing events.
Class II road No. II/445 connects Mutkov with the surrounding settlements. It is a specific indication of the connection between the village and its surroundings. When choosing a destination, Mutkov can be considered both in terms of its themes of forests, cycling and history, and in terms of the road connection described here.
