Levice lies where the Lower Hron Valley plain meets the western foothills of the Ipeľ Hills. Experiences that can shape a trip to the area include protected landscapes, hikes and exhibitions on regional crafts and history. You can plan your time in different ways: around nature and trails, museums or events.

Landscapes, Water and Views

Horšianska Valley is a protected national nature reserve. An easy walk follows the Sikenica stream, combining a visit to the protected area with a waterside route. At the Levice ponds, other aspects take centre stage: they are an important resting place for migratory birds and are also used for fish farming. Both bird resting and fish farming are part of what defines these ponds.

Poiplie encompasses water habitats typical of southern Slovakia, agricultural landscapes and pastureland. The area is important for bird species such as the white stork (Ciconia ciconia), common kingfisher (Alcedo atthis) and European bee-eater (Merops apiaster). In Santovka, the protected travertine formations lie by the Búr stream; Tufová kopa is also designated as a protected natural formation there.

A viewpoint with historical significance is Šiklóš (Vápnik). Visitors come for its unique panoramic views of the region, and it is associated with the historic extraction of “Levický zlatý ónyx.” You can reach Šiklóš on foot, by bicycle or by car. Check local route conditions before your visit.

Hiking with Different Route Details

The marked Pukanec–Devičany hiking route passes over the Krížny buk saddle and through Ťatiar, Argaš, Priesil and Žuhračka. It is 17 kilometres long, with an elevation gain listed as 705 metres. In Bátovce, the “Okolo mesta kráľovien” educational trail offers a different option: it is 5.3 kilometres long, passes through easy terrain and takes about four hours.

The details provided emphasise different aspects to help you plan. For the Pukanec–Devičany route, the distance and elevation gain are specified; for the educational trail in Bátovce, the terrain and approximate duration are also given. This puts the 17-kilometre Pukanec–Devičany route with its 705-metre elevation gain alongside the 5.3-kilometre trail in Bátovce, which has easy terrain and takes about four hours.

Museums and Crafts

The Bohunice Water Mill exhibition has been open to the public since 1978; the mill is designated as a technical monument. The exhibition at the Jána Franka Pottery Museum in Pukanec includes a pottery workshop. Visitors can see how ceramics were made in the past and how they are made today. The exhibition on Pukanec’s history covers the village’s earliest history, the development of mining and crafts, and historic kitchen and bourgeois-room interiors. It is located at Námestie mieru 17 in Pukanec.

The Hontianske Museum features permanent exhibitions on the ethnography and history of the Hont region. Since exhibition content may change, check what is currently on display before your visit. The Hontianske Museum and the Ľudovít Simonyi Gallery offer visitor groups guided tours of the city’s attractions; arrange group visits in advance.

Events and Thermal Water

Various events are held at Levický hrad Castle, including the Levické hradné slávnosti. Check event dates before your trip. The Levický jarmok fair is currently held in mid-October and features local wines, burčiak, food and crafts over four days. It is also advisable to check the exact event dates in advance.

The Margita-Ilona leisure complex has four pools with thermal water at temperatures of 25 to 29 °C. As operating details may change, check current opening information before your trip. Together with the hiking trails, natural areas and museums, this offers a range of reasons to visit Levice.
