Horné Semerovce: Church, Manor House and Cycling Route
Accommodation in Horné Semerovce
Horné Semerovce lies on the southeastern edge of the Ipeľská pahorkatina uplands, in the Široká dolina valley of the Štiavnica. When planning your trip, you can focus on different things: the protected landscape, historic architectural styles and the Šahanská trasa cycling route. If you are particularly interested in architectural history, the church, crypt, manor house and bell tower are all worth exploring. For a cycling stage, the route length and surface provide practical planning details.
Landscape and park
Hornosemerovský Park is a protected landscape area (CHA) in Horné Semerovce. It covers 118,791 m² and was designated as protected in 1984. This protected status adds a landscape dimension to the architectural points of interest. The year of designation also places this protection in its historical context alongside the history of the historic buildings.
Church, crypt and manor house
The Church of All Saints (Kostol Všetkých svätých) is originally Gothic and was built on older foundations. This reference to the foundations adds an earlier building layer to its Gothic classification. At the southern portal, there is a runic inscription on the architrave and a trace of a fresco in the ogee-shaped tympanum. The architrave is the horizontal element at the top of the portal, while the tympanum is the panel above it; this helps distinguish which architectural element each detail belongs to. The church is listed under number 1603/0 in the Central Register of the Slovak Monument Fund and belongs to the Hokovce parish.
The crypt of the Stainlein-Saalenstein family also has a clearly recognizable form: its floor plan is T-shaped, and it contains burial niches for 31 members of noble families. This introduces a different architectural form alongside the portal design.
The Wilczekovský Manor House (Wilczekovský kaštieľ) was built in 1763 in the Baroque style. Its U-shaped floor plan faces a park. Compared with the originally Gothic church, the manor house offers different points of reference: its Baroque style describes its historical classification, while its floor plan and orientation define its spatial layout.
The brick bell tower in Horné Semerovce was built in the early 18th century. The solid structure has a square floor plan and pentagonal sound openings. The combination of a square basic shape and pentagonal openings gives the tower two distinct architectural features. It is in good condition and continues to serve its purpose.
Cycling on the Šahanská trasa
A route description from 2021 gives the Šahanská trasa a total length of 45 kilometres and identifies the Horné Semerovce–Hrubá Hora section. The route follows paved roads and unpaved farm tracks and is designated for cross bikes. For planning, the total length and the surface are separate considerations: the length indicates the extent of the route, while the changing surface describes the terrain. Check the route conditions before setting out, as surfaces can change.
