Jabloňovce: Varta, Historic Cellars and Church Grounds
Accommodation in Jabloňovce
Jabloňovce lies in the Štiavnické vrchy, in the basin of the Jablonianka stream. The municipal area ranges from 247 to 574 metres in elevation. Its hilly terrain is mostly deforested and consists of tuffs, tuffites and andesites; only the higher-lying part is forested. Open slopes and higher-lying wooded areas therefore sit side by side.
Varta: Views and Cellars
Varta (Stráž) offers views of Jabloňovce and the more distant former free royal town of Pukanec. Hand-hewn cellars lie on Varta’s western slope near Jabloňovce and probably date from the 18th or 19th century. They were used to store wine and fruit from the vineyards and orchards on the slope. Varta thus brings together two distinct themes: views of Jabloňovce and Pukanec, and the former storage of wine and fruit on the slope. A municipal visitor information page, last updated in 2021, lists some of the cellars as accessible. Please check current access arrangements before visiting.
Church Grounds and Local History
The Husitský chrám in Jabloňovce dates from 1459. Its courtyard is surrounded by a defensive wall with loopholes, also dating from 1459. The courtyard is home to a Tolerance Linden, dated to 1782, with a trunk circumference of just under six metres. The Tolerance Bell Tower, also dated to 1782, stands near the linden. The grounds of the evangelical church building in Jabloňovce also include a defensive wall and a stone entrance gate. The shingles on both have been renewed, preserving their authentic appearance. A memorial plaque recalls that Martin Kukučín wrote the novella Mišo in Jabloňovce.
Forest, Mushroom Season and Hiking Route
In Jabloňovce, in the Štiavnické vrchy, forest walks and mushroom picking are outdoor activities to enjoy. The mushroom season is especially pronounced in August and September. The emphasis is therefore on seasonal picking, while forest walks are a more general outdoor activity. A hiking route with clearly named stops, Jabloňovce–Bátovce, passes Varta (Stráž), the tuff-like cellars, the Pečenická dolina valley, the Borovica viewpoint, the Bátovce reservoir and the Baroque bridge over the Sikenica.
More Activities and Local Events
A municipal visitor information page for Babkin Statok, last updated in July 2021, mentions horse riding, buying ceramic products, and walks around the farm and in the surrounding area; basset hounds, goats and cats are also kept there. Please check the current arrangements before your visit.
Jabloňovský kotlík is a recurring goulash-cooking competition; its 11th edition was held in 2023. For the 13th edition, which was announced for 29 August 2026, a tasting and judging of cauldron specialties, as well as venison goulash, beer, alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, and Perky were planned.
