Levice offers several themes to consider when planning your stay: city history, archaeological culture, winegrowing and nature. If you are looking for a hotel in Levice, you can start by basing your choice on the visits you have planned: would you prefer to focus on museums and architectural history, wine, or landscapes and leisure? The destinations differ both in subject matter and in their visiting conditions.

City History and Museum Program

The archaeology exhibition at the Tekov Museum covers social development from the Stone Age to the Early Middle Ages in the museum’s area of activity. It also covers the Želiezovce, Maďarovce and Čaka cultures, named after sites in the Levice District. Alongside the long historical periods, the exhibition thus also focuses on specific archaeological cultures. The Tekov Museum also offers exhibitions, classical music concerts and lectures. Events include the Night of Museums and Galleries and Museum Week. If a particular concert or event is important to your plans, check the current dates.

The Church of St. Michael the Archangel was built by the Esterházy family between 1773 and 1780, following a major city fire. Dobó Manor represents a different period in architectural history: it is a two-storey Renaissance fortified manor house dating from the second half of the 16th century. Sources give either 1853 or 1854 as the year the first synagogue in Levice was built, so the date remains uncertain between these two years.

Kalvária and Winegrowing

At Levická Kalvária, religious architectural history sits alongside natural history. It includes 14 Stations of the Cross chapels and the restored remains of a historic church from the 18th century. The educational trail provides information about the site’s history, flora and fauna. A panoramic information board offers views of the area around Levice. In favourable weather, the observation tower is open on Sundays and public holidays from 15:00 to 17:00, from May to October. Check this seasonal opening period and the weather conditions before your visit.

Wine can also be discovered from different perspectives. Wines from local producers can be tasted by prior arrangement in the former Schoeller estate cellars beneath Kalvária. A tasting therefore requires contacting the venue in advance. At Krížny vrch, there are more than 70 hectares of vineyards and around 250 hajloks, or wine cottages. An educational trail runs between the hajloks through the wine-growing area. This offers different options for different interests: a planned tasting appointment or a walk through the cultural landscape of the vineyards.

Nature and Leisure

The Levické rybníky protected area along the Perec stream was designated in 1974, covers 91.83 hectares and borders directly on Levice’s built-up area. A recreation area created in 2013 complements the site. Information boards cover its origins and significance, as well as its flora and fauna. These details give visitors a concrete idea of the natural features they can learn about there.

The Horšianska dolina is also worth considering as part of the wider regional hiking area. The site is a national nature reserve where protection levels 3 and 4 apply; part of it is of European importance. The protected-area designations differ from the information about Levické rybníky and offer another perspective on the region’s nature.

The Margita–Ilona facility offers a different kind of leisure activity. It is located 6 km from Levice in the direction of Šahy, in the Kalinčiakovo district, and includes an outdoor swimming pool with four pools and sports grounds. It operates seasonally, and the facilities may change; check the current conditions before visiting. This makes it easy to distinguish this day-trip destination from the cultural and landscape attractions when planning your days.
