Tekovský Hrádok combines archaeological traces from different periods with its location in the Hron floodplain. Cycling and triathlon routes are also relevant when planning a trip, and vary in distance, surface, and sporting discipline.

Archaeological Traces and Local History

Among the later finds are Slavic ramparts from the 9th and 10th centuries. The remains of the Zemný hrad earthwork are in the western part of today’s Tekovský Hrádok cemetery. The finds differ not only in age but also in form: a settlement, ramparts, and castle remains.

The former settlement of Horný Várad is recorded under the name Warad from 1232. The vanished Várad Castle is also associated with Tekovský Hrádok. Together with the archaeological finds, these names and building remains offer different points of reference for local history.

The Reformed Church

The Reformed (Calvinist) Church also reflects several construction phases: it was originally built as a Toleration church in 1780 and completely rebuilt in 1889. It is in good condition and continues to serve its religious purpose. If you plan to visit, check in advance whether and when entry is possible.

Landscape and Getting There

Tekovský Hrádok lies on the right-hand floodplain of the Hron, in the northeastern part of the Danubian Lowland. Railway line 152 between Štúrovo and Levice runs south of the built-up area. There is a railway stop in the cadastral area of Dolný Tekovský Hrádok. The route of the line and the location of the stop are separate points of reference. Before travelling by train, check the current timetable to make sure the connection suits your travel dates.

Cycling and Triathlon

In the Hronský Triatlon, the 5 km paddling course ends at Tekovský Hrádok on the right bank; it runs over moderately flowing water. The cycling course starts at Tekovský Hrádok and follows a dirt track and a grass-covered embankment along the Hron towards Turá. If you are travelling for the competition, check the event dates and participation requirements in advance. The two sections require different planning: on the water, distance and water conditions matter; on the bike, the described surface and route are relevant.

For a longer ride, the planned blue regional cycling route MERIDIEM (No. 2122) is another point of reference. It connects Trávnica with Tekovský Hrádok and ends there at the junction with the existing yellow route 8103 “Levice–Bardoňovo”. The 28.2 km route is rated as a moderately difficult SPORT-MTB route and runs over asphalt, paved paths, and field and forest tracks. Its profile therefore includes a variety of surfaces. Check route conditions before setting off; maintenance and weather can change the characteristics of the route.
