Želiezovce – Cultural History and Nature
Accommodation in Želiezovce
Želiezovce lies in the Danubian Lowland on the right bank of the Hron. The town brings together an early settlement history, buildings with Gothic and Baroque-Classical features, memories of Franz Schubert, and protected parks and landscapes. If you are looking for a hotel for a stay in Želiezovce, these different themes can help you decide what you would like to focus on during your trip.
Cultural history across several periods
In the center of Želiezovce stands the originally Gothic Church of St. James. It preserves Gothic wall paintings dating from around 1430. The altar base is made from a Roman sarcophagus dating to the 2nd century. Thus, Gothic paintings and a much older Roman artifact come together within a single church building.
Esterházy Castle was originally Baroque and was later remodeled in the Classical style. The sequence of stylistic phases is particularly clear at the castle: its Baroque origins were followed by a Classical remodeling. This adds a different kind of architectural change to the church’s Gothic features.
Sovom zámočku houses the town museum and a Franz Schubert memorial room. The archaeological exhibition covers the Želiezovská culture and spans periods from the Stone Age through the Bronze, Iron and Roman Ages to the Migration Period. Upstairs, a room is dedicated to the composer’s life and work and is furnished with period furniture. The themes thus range from archaeological periods to Schubert’s life and work.
The first written mention of Želiezovce dates to 1274. At that time, the town appears under the name Selyz as a settlement with a church, a mill and a stone bridge. The year provides a chronological reference point for the town’s history; the three features mentioned belong specifically to this early account.
The history of the Sachertorte is also connected with Želiezovce. Count Ján Karol Esterházy brought Franz Sacher to the town as his personal chef. In Želiezovce, Sacher is described as the inventor of the world-famous Sachertorte.
Parks and landscapes along the Hron
Želiezovský Park is a protected historic park in Želiezovce. F. Schubert Park is a 13-hectare protected area in the center. It is home to a protected 25-meter-tall bald cypress (Taxodium distichum), estimated to be 200 years old. The tree’s age is therefore explicitly an estimate.
