Ondrejovce: Local History and Cycling
Accommodation in Ondrejovce
Three topics are particularly useful when planning a stay in Ondrejovce: the architectural history of St. Andrew’s Church, the municipality’s historical exhibition and cycling routes through the area. Geographically, Ondrejovce lies in a broad valley of the Hron, east of the foothills of the Pohronská pahorkatina uplands. When looking for a hotel, you can plan your trip around whether cultural history, cycling or both are your main interests.
Church, Chapel and Local History
The Church of St. Andrew the Apostle dates back to a 14th-century Gothic church; the Baroque renovation of 1753 was followed by reconstruction in 1810 in its present form. In 2016, the church was declared a national cultural monument. This makes it possible to distinguish between its different building phases and its later monument status.
The chapel on the western outskirts of Ondrejovce lies on the main road to Dolný Pial and has been designated a national cultural monument since 2015. The chapel grounds are freely accessible; check the access situation on site again before your visit.
Skalka is an artificial ruin built by Viktor Benkovich in the 1930s. It therefore belongs to a much more recent chapter than the Gothic origins of St. Andrew’s Church.
Historical Exhibition
The permanent historical exhibition “The Past and Present of the Municipality of Ondrejovce” opened on 3 July 2016 in a multipurpose building in the park next to the cultural centre. It presents manor houses and curiae that no longer exist, as well as the economic and administrative activities of the families who lived in Ondrejovce. A visit thus brings together reminders of historic buildings and the history of the families and their activities in the municipality.
To arrange a visit, you can contact János Luky; make arrangements in advance and confirm the contact before you arrive. Visitors interested in the municipality’s and families’ history alongside its architectural history will find a complementary perspective in the exhibition.
Unlike St. Andrew’s Church, whose history is defined by its Gothic origins, Baroque renovation and later reconstruction, the exhibition is not only about architectural history, but also about the economic and administrative activities of former families. This places an architectural and a social perspective on local history side by side.
Cycling on Two Routes
A municipal notice from September 2025 identifies Ondrejovce as a location on the blue MERIDIEM cycling route. The route is suitable for mountain bikers. Route 8103 Levice–Bardoňovo also passes through Ondrejovce; it is classified as an easy recreational route for mountain bikes.
The routes offer different points of comparison: route 8103 is explicitly classified as easy, while MERIDIEM is described as suitable for mountain bikers. If you are planning based on these characteristics, you can distinguish the stated recreational classification of route 8103 from MERIDIEM’s suitability for mountain biking. Check MERIDIEM’s current route before setting out.
