For a stay in Tlmače, the Hron and the foothills of the Štiavnické vrchy provide distinctive geographical landmarks. Most of the town lies in the floodplain on the Hron’s left bank, at the southwestern foot of the mountain range. The newer district of Lipník is on the right bank, on higher ground that slopes down towards the river. The town’s description is therefore shaped by two distinct riverside settings.

Between the Hron and the Štiavnické vrchy

The place where the Hron emerges from the ring of mountains is called Porta Slovenica or Slovenská brána. This geomorphological formation was created by erosion: the Hron cut through volcanic agglomerates, separating the Kozmálovské vŕšky from the Štiavnické vrchy proper. For those interested in nature and landscapes, the name connects the river’s location with the history of how the surrounding area was formed.

Plešovica Circular Trail and Viewpoint

The Náučný chodník Plešovica is an easy circular trail, just under nine kilometres long. It starts right in Tlmače’s town square, where the first information board is located. There are six boards along the route in total, as well as a turn-off to a viewpoint. The trail therefore has a clearly identified starting point and several stops along the way.

The circular trail is suitable for walks with children. Reaching the viewpoint involves a steep half-kilometre climb; at the top, there are panoramic views of the surrounding area. If you’d like to include the viewpoint, it’s worth taking this section into account separately when planning. This way, the route’s description as an easy circular trail and the steep climb to the viewpoint remain distinct aspects of the same outing.

Festunok and Historic Churches

Festunok, also known as Hrádze, is a Slavic hillfort dating from the 9th century. It stands on a steep rock above the bridge in Tlmače. Its position on the rock and above the bridge is as much part of the site’s description as its historical classification.

The Roman Catholic Church of P. Márie Sedembolestnej was built and opened for use in 1928 in the municipal cemetery. Another Roman Catholic church is located in the Lipník settlement and is dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. It was consecrated on Sunday, 11 November 2012. Inside is a stone altar containing relics of Saint Thomas Aquinas.

For planning your trip, you can distinguish between these points of interest according to your interests: Plešovica offers the key details of a specific walk with a viewpoint, while the hillfort and churches focus on history. The buildings also differ considerably in age: the hillfort dates from the 9th century, the church in the municipal cemetery was opened for use in 1928, and the church in Lipník was consecrated in 2012. If you’re looking for a hotel in Tlmače, choosing a focus can help you tailor your stay to the topics that interest you most.
