Veľké Kozmálovce on the Hron: Culture and Recreation
Accommodation in Veľké Kozmálovce
Veľké Kozmálovce lies on the left bank of the Hron. The municipality is entirely situated on a plain; its landscape also includes the reservoir of the Vodná stavba Veľké Kozmálovce and several historic landmarks. Two distinct themes can help you plan your trip: recreation and fishing by the water, and the church, crosses and memorial sites in the village. You can decide in advance whether the landscape and leisure activities or local history will play a greater role in your stay.
Water, leisure and public spaces
The reservoir of the Vodná stavba Veľké Kozmálovce is 2 km long and 300 m wide. Its surroundings have been used for recreation for several years and also offer opportunities for anglers. A 2018 report also described the area as a place used by people engaging in sports and sport fishing. Recreation, fishing and sports are therefore specific activities associated with the water; they differ from the cultural and historical focus of the village centre.
In the centre, there is a public space for recreation and leisure, as well as municipal, social and cultural events. The central recreational area includes a covered stage, a gazebo, an entrance arch, a playground and a covered market hall with a sales counter. This information thus brings together public leisure areas and spaces for events. Another local stop is the Hájik recreational zone on the Pohronská cyklomagistrála cycling route. Cyclists, tourists and visitors are also among the intended users of Hájik.
The church, crosses and local history
The Church of All Saints was rebuilt from the ground up in 1752, on a larger scale and in the Baroque style. The church contains a life-size mural of Jesus and his disciples dating from 1981. An illuminated cross atop the church tower can be seen from up to 5 km away. The building’s history, the mural and the tower cross each offer a different point of interest: the Baroque structure, a later artwork and a landmark visible from far away.
A statue of the Holy Trinity stands in the centre of Veľké Kozmálovce. It was commissioned in 1937 by local people who had gone to America in search of work. In the southern part of the village, Dolný koniec, stands the municipality’s oldest cross, erected in 1854. All three crosses in the built-up area were reconstructed in 2008. These represent two distinct points in time: 1854 is the year the oldest cross was erected, while 2008 is the year all three crosses were reconstructed.
The reconstructed war memorial names those who fell in both world wars. It also commemorates seven unknown Soviet soldiers who died in the municipality during the passage of the front in the winter of 1944–1945. The history of the village thus includes not only religious buildings and crosses, but also remembrance of the victims of war.
Customs and traditional dress
Residents preserved the local kozmálovský dress for a long time. Customs were revived at baptisms, engagements, weddings and carnival celebrations. The occasions listed range from family celebrations to community festivities, and illustrate different aspects of local traditions. Together with the church, crosses and war memorial, they form a focus distinct from the leisure opportunities at the reservoir and the cycling route. When planning your stay, you can weigh up these cultural and recreational interests.
