Tekovské Lužany offers historic churches, Jewish history, a traditional longhouse and a nature trail around the reservoir. The topics range from architectural history and religious use to remembrance and rural architecture.

Churches and historical connections

The Church of St Stephen the King was built as a Baroque church between 1742 and 1745. It is in good condition and continues to be used for religious purposes. The church of the Reformed Christian Church was built in 1784, initially without a tower; the tower was added in 1792. A Baroque statue of the Holy Trinity, erected in 1755, stands in the rectory garden of the Roman Catholic church.

A battle took place mainly in the area around the Reformed church. This connection adds historical context to the building’s history, linking it to the surroundings of the place of worship.

Jewish remembrance and community history

The larger Jewish cemetery is home to a Holocaust memorial to the Jewish victims of the Second World War from Tekovské Lužany and Tekovské Lužianky. The Museum of the Jewish Religious Community provides information about the life, culture and customs of the local Jewish community up to 1944. The memorial and museum focus on different aspects: the memorial commemorates the victims of the Holocaust, while the museum is dedicated to the life and customs of the community.

Visits to the museum are possible by appointment by telephone. Arrange your visit before you travel so that you can include it in your plans.

The Folklore House: rural architecture and present-day use

The Folklore House is a traditional rural longhouse with a narrow courtyard and a preserved room layout. It includes a front room, kitchen, back room with an oven, summer kitchen and stable. Its layout reveals not only the longhouse’s exterior form but also the different spaces inside: living rooms, cooking areas and the stable are all part of the preserved house structure.

Today, the rooms serve as a community centre for traditional and contemporary cultural and social events. The preserved rural architecture thus sits alongside its present-day use as a community space.

Reservoir, nature trail and getting there

The Tekovské Lužany reservoir is privately owned and is currently used exclusively for fish farming. Therefore, do not plan to use it as a public swimming or boating area. The nature trail around the reservoir has three information boards about the reservoir, its fauna and waste. These boards broaden the focus on the body of water to include these two additional topics.

Tekovské Lužany can be reached by bus from Levice and Bardoňovo, as well as by passenger trains on the route between Levice and Štúrovo. Check the timetables before travelling, as transport connections may change. If you want to visit the museum, arrange an appointment by telephone and choose your connection to suit your plans.
