Žemberovce lies at the transition between the northern part of the Ipeľská pahorkatina and the Štiavnické vrchy. There are two clearly distinct interests to consider when choosing a place to stay: the Horšianska dolina nature trail and its specific route conditions, and the town’s cultural heritage.

Landscape and the Horšianska dolina Nature Trail

The northern section of the Horšianska dolina nature trail passes through the Horšianska dolina National Nature Reserve. The trail is 5.8 kilometres long and takes about 2 to 2.5 hours to walk. Classified as moderately difficult, it offers a concrete basis for planning when considered together with its length and walking time. For the northern section, it is recommended to walk from Žemberovce to Horša.

A viewpoint on the nature trail offers a unique view of a meander of the Sikenica and displays andesite pyroclastics. The Sikenica must be crossed at a signposted ford along the way. Passage through the valley is not permitted when water levels are high, during snowmelt, or after heavy rain. Check conditions before setting out. In addition, the Natura 2000 site SKUEV0870 includes the cadastral area of Dolné Žemberovce.

Buildings and Local Cultural Heritage

Žemberovce Manor House is a Classicist mansion with Neo-Romanesque alterations. It was renovated in 1812 and extended with an addition at the end of the 19th century. The Roman Catholic Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary is a Baroque church built in 1754. The Evangelical church is architecturally distinct: it was built in 1886 in the traditional Classicist style of Josephine churches. The single-nave building has a polygonal chancel, a sacristy, and a projecting tower. The manor house combines a Classicist basic design with Neo-Romanesque alterations, while the churches add two further stylistic accents: Baroque and Josephine Classicism.

The memory of Major Daniel Gonda is also part of Žemberovce’s cultural heritage. His birthplace is listed as a memorial house with a commemorative plaque; his grave and tombstone are listed as protected cultural heritage in Žemberovce. An annual tradition is the Fašiangy carnival procession. If you plan to visit for it, check the dates separately.

The town’s traditional working and cultural history includes viticulture, weaving, basketry, and the production of wooden goods. These historic activities complement the architectural history with a different perspective on Žemberovce: alongside churches, the manor house, and memorial sites, traditional forms of work also shape the town’s character.
