Discover Šarovce on the right bank of the Hron
Accommodation in Šarovce
Šarovce lies on the right bank of the Hron. The town offers several clear points of interest for a stay: archaeological traces from widely separated periods, two churches with distinct building histories, a municipal museum, and the cultural event “Turičné stretnutie” in May. The VN Šarovce fishing area is another specific point of reference. You can plan your trip around history, culture or fishing.
Archaeological traces and local history
Šarovce has evidence of intensive settlement by the Baden culture around 3000 BC, including numerous pottery fragments. The archaeological finds also include two bronze daggers discovered in cultural pits. During the La Tène period, from 450 BC to the beginning of the Common Era, a spacious Celtic farmstead stood in what is now Šarovce. The Baden culture predates the La Tène period by a considerable margin; the farmstead belongs to this later era. A bust of Emperor Marcus Aurelius was unveiled in Šarovce on 19 November 2014.
Museum and churches
The Dedinské múzeum Šarovce features archaeological, ethnographic and contemporary exhibitions about the municipality. Its three sections connect themes from the past and present without limiting the focus to archaeology. Museum visits can be arranged with Alžbeta Boháčová at 036/7792056.
The churches’ building histories can also be traced through specific features and dates. The Roman Catholic Church of the Holy Guardian Angels in Veľké Šarovce is a Neoclassical building erected on the site of an older early Gothic church dating from the 13th century. In Malé Šarovce, the Reformed church was built in 1780 as a Toleration church without a tower, enlarged in 1832, and given a tower in 1899. The comparison therefore brings two distinct building histories side by side: a Neoclassical building with a medieval predecessor, and a church whose construction, enlargement and tower addition are recorded in three dates.
Cultural event and fishing area
Since 2005, Csemadok has held “Turičné stretnutie” every May. If the event affects your choice of dates, check the specific event dates before travelling. This lets you take the recurring May event into account when planning without committing to a particular day for your visit.
The VN Šarovce fishing area near Šarovce covers a water surface of 19.8 ha and extends from MVE Šarovce to the Tekovské Lužany–Demandice road bridge. Fishing is prohibited year-round at the functional structures of the MVE Šarovce facility. If fishing is relevant to your stay, this geographic scope is important information for planning.
