Nový Tekov on the Hron: Churches and Equestrian History
Accommodation in Nový Tekov
Nový Tekov lies on the right-bank floodplain of the Hron. The river shapes the landscape and also provides a point of reference for a change in the town’s history: a former ferry connected Nový Tekov with Starý Tekov across the Hron; it was replaced by a modern single-lane bridge. The change from ferry service to a bridge makes the Hron visible both as a landscape feature and as part of the town’s history.
Churches and Architectural History
The Roman Catholic Church of St. Charles in Nový Tekov is a Baroque-Classical church dating from 1811. The Reformed church in the town was built in the Classical style in 1791. Inside are a red marble communion table dating from 1821 and a red marble Classical pulpit dating from 1829. The Reformed church was restored in 1850 after a fire. It is twenty years older than St. Charles; the two churches also differ in their stylistic classifications.
Archaeological Finds, Memorial Room and Historic Houses
Archaeological finds in Nový Tekov date back further than the churches with recorded dates. Among the oldest is a Roman-Barbarian settlement from the 8th to 9th century; a Slavic inhumation grave from the 9th century is also among the local finds. The two examples date from roughly the same period but represent different types of finds: a settlement and a grave.
The Nový Tekov memorial room is located in the premises of the former one-room school. It opened to mark the 700th anniversary of the municipality’s first written mention. Visits are possible on Thursdays from 16:30 to 18:30; visits for organized groups can be arranged in advance. Check visiting hours before you arrive. The cemetery is also a noteworthy historic place, particularly for its old gravestones. Several original 19th-century houses, along with their outbuildings, have been preserved in the Marušová district. Alongside churches and archaeological finds, you can therefore encounter evidence of historic everyday life.
Equestrian History and Activities on the Hron
The Nový Tekov stud farm was established in 1861 to breed draft and sport horses. The stud farm’s historic offerings included horseback rides, carriage rides and rides in a sulky. These are distinct from the current offerings at Ranč u Bobiho, which include carriage or wagon rides that follow the Hron and pass through Nový Tekov before returning to the ranch grounds, as well as year-round riding lessons for beginners and lower-intermediate riders. Horseback rides along the Hron are considered an opportunity to discover the local flora and fauna. The difference between the current options lies in their focus: the carriage or wagon ride follows a described route and returns to the ranch grounds, while the horseback rides combine riding with the local flora and fauna.
