Bielovce brings together the landscape along the Ipeľ and local architectural and settlement history spanning several centuries. The border river offers opportunities for fishing and relaxation. Churches, manor houses and memorials represent different chapters in the history of the village. Visitors choosing Bielovce as a destination can therefore focus both on the river landscape and on its historic buildings.

River landscape and relaxation

Bielovce lies in the Ipeľ Hills (Ipeľská pahorkatina), as well as in the floodplain and on the terraces of the Ipeľ. The village landscape therefore includes both hilly terrain and the river area. The floodplain and terraces refer to distinct areas along the river; together with the hills, they give Bielovce a clear landscape setting. The Ipeľ offers opportunities for fishing and relaxation. Its location on the border river thus connects the landscape with a specific leisure activity.

Churches: construction dates and alterations

The Roman Catholic Church of St Martin dates from 1714. It has a single nave, a rectangular-ended presbytery and an integrated tower. “Single-nave” describes a church interior with one main nave; the presbytery is the liturgical area at the end of the church interior. This description therefore covers the building’s floor plan, spatial layout and tower position.

The Reformed church dates from 1781 and was altered in 1913. Its furnishings date from the period when the church was built. The two dates answer different questions: 1781 marks the construction date, while 1913 refers to a later alteration. Together with St Martin’s Church, this helps place Bielovce’s ecclesiastical architecture in time without conflating the construction date with a later change.

Manor houses and distillery

The manor houses also offer different architectural points of reference. The two-towered Neo-Gothic manor house of the Csécsi-Csillag family was built in the early 19th century. The Neoclassical manor house of the Bossányi family also dates from the 19th century. The style labels help distinguish the two buildings: Neo-Gothic draws on Gothic forms, while Neoclassicism refers to classical architecture. The Csécsi-Csillag manor house is additionally noted for its two towers.

The Szeszler family distillery dates from 1912. It adds another historic building to the religious and residential buildings. Together, the manor houses and the distillery offer a different perspective on Bielovce from the churches: the focus here is on different building types and their place in the 19th and early 20th centuries.

Monuments and memorial sites

The monument to those who fell in the First and Second World Wars dates from 1994. The cemetery contains a cross with a cast-iron corpus dating from 1865; the Simonyi family tomb monument dates from the 19th century. Another stone cross in an enclosed garden next to the church was erected in 1946. The different dates and forms give each memorial site its own historical significance.

To understand the local history, it is worth noting these differences: churches, manor houses, the distillery and monuments do not represent the same building purpose or period. Bielovce thus combines the border river and its recreational opportunities with an architectural history extending from the early 18th century to the late 20th century.
