Plášťovce offers several distinct points of interest for your trip: the Šípka Nature Reserve, historic buildings and local folklore. If you are looking for a hotel in Plášťovce, you can first decide whether nature, architectural history or a regularly held festival should shape your stay. The following places and activities will help you identify these priorities.

Nature and nature trail

The Šípka Nature Reserve was designated in 1988, covers 46.8 hectares and is subject to the fourth level of protection. It protects forest-steppe communities on volcanic sandstone and conglomerates. The area is home to heat- and drought-loving steppe communities with rare and protected species. Both the distinctive vegetation and its geological substrate are defining features of the protected area. Check the current protection status before visiting.

The Náučný chodník Plášťovce nature trail starts at the Turecká kaplnka. The Neoclassical wayside chapel stands at the site of a battle and is also a starting point for the trail. The trail is 12 kilometres long and has an elevation gain of 160 metres. Much of the route is suitable for bicycles. Its length and elevation gain provide concrete figures for planning your trip; however, bicycle suitability does not apply to the entire route.

Churches and architectural history

The present-day Church of St. George was built of brick in the Art Nouveau style. Its tower is 42 metres high. It is probably the third church to stand on the same site. The town’s architectural history therefore brings together different periods: a succession of earlier churches at this location and the present church with its own architecture.

The Palásthyovci manor house was originally built in the Baroque style in the early 18th century and completed in 1730. At the beginning of the 19th century, it was remodelled in the Neoclassical style. The building thus combines a Baroque period of origin with a later Neoclassical alteration. A two-winged Neoclassical manor house from the 19th century, with a flat ceiling, is now neglected and in ruins. The Holy Trinity statue in Plášťovce is a preserved local religious monument dating from 1901.

Folklore and events

The Búzavirág folklore group from Plášťovce presents local customs and singing programmes. Its repertoire includes a traditional wedding from Plášťovce. The group performs at various events at home and abroad. For travellers interested in regional culture, this programme offers a distinctive connection to local traditions, separate from the architectural history of the church and manor house.

Regular events include the regional children’s folklore festival for kindergartens “Szólj, síp, szólj!” and the Oberačkové slávnosti, a grape harvest festival held in September. If a festival is the reason for your trip, check the specific event dates in advance. This lets you plan your trip around an actual date without assuming that regularly held events take place on a fixed date.

Cycling route and trip planning

There are also different details to consider for cycling trips: the Náučný chodník Plášťovce nature trail is 12 kilometres long and has an elevation gain of 160 metres; much of it is suitable for bicycles. The Hrušovská cycling route is classified as a moderately difficult MTB route and continues through Rykynčice to Plášťovce. The route descriptions therefore differ: for the nature trail, the focus is on length and elevation gain, while the cycling route is classified as a moderately difficult MTB trail.

To reach the nature trail, take a bus to Plášťovce, then walk about 1.5 kilometres southwest from the town centre. Check bus connections separately. As route conditions can change, it is also worth checking the trail before setting out. If your trip focuses on folklore, the event date is the key planning factor.
