Slatina brings together local history and landscape with the theme of mineral water. For planning your trip, sacred cultural heritage, cycling routes and road connections are also possible points of interest.

Landscape and mineral water

Slatina lies in the Štiavnica valley, at the foot of the western foothills of the Krupinská planina. Travertine hills are found in the area where Slatina-type mineral water emerges. This geological context places the mineral water within the landscape. A mineral water spring is located 500 m south of the village, in the area of a bottling plant. Access in the plant area is described as good; however, you should check whether the spring is currently open to the public before visiting.

Local history and sacred cultural heritage

The oldest surviving written mention of Slatina dates from 1245; the settlement is referred to in it as “villa Zalatna.” The study of mineral water is also part of the village’s history: in 1802, Dr. Pavol Kitaibel examined its physicochemical and medicinal properties. He recorded a stable temperature of 14.4 °C. The Church of Saint John of Nepomuk is Slatina’s most significant sacred monument. Together, the early form of the name, the historical study and the church offer different points of reference for exploring the village’s history.

Road connections for orientation

Two road connections are useful for getting your bearings in the region. Slatina is on Road I/75, which directly connects the village with Veľký Krtíš, 44 km away, and Lučenec, 88 km away. European route E77 runs about 2 km west of Slatina and connects the area with a Hungarian border crossing 14 km away. This means you can include both the connections to the two named towns and the location of the E77 as separate points of reference in your trip planning. If your trip includes several stops, these details can help you place Slatina within your wider route.

Cycling routes with different profiles

There are also two different route options for cycling. The Šahanská trasa runs from Dudince through vineyards to Slatina and onward to Šahy. The Hrušovský okruh 2594 is a moderately difficult, blue-marked circular cycling route with a total length of 75 km. It passes through Sečianky, Kleňany and Ipeľské Úľany to Slatina and a mineral water spring. The differences offer specific points of comparison: the Šahanská trasa is distinguished by its passage through vineyards and the sequence of villages, while the Hrušovský okruh is defined by its circular layout, markings, difficulty and total length. You can compare these features with the kind of cycling trip you’d like to include in your stay.

Recurring event dates

The municipal development plan describes Hody as a cultural event held every year in May. It also lists an Advent concert in December as an annual event. If you’d like to time your stay to coincide with either event, check the specific dates before travelling.
