Prostějov District, also known as Prostějovsko, links the Drahanská Highlands with the broad plain of Haná. This range of uplands and open plains gives the destination a varied landscape. When planning your trip, you can decide whether hiking, cycling, nature, winter sports or culture should be the focus. At 442 metres, Velký Kosíř is the highest peak in Haná and is associated with the Kosíř Nature Park.

Hiking, cycling and the Plumlov Reservoir

The marked Velký Kosíř Educational Trail is suitable for hikes and mountain biking trips. Cycling Route No. 5, known as the Jantarová Cycling Trail, passes through Prostějovsko. Most sections of the Romže Cycle Route are paved and away from roads; near Bělecký Mlýn, there are also sections on gravel and forest tracks. These details give you concrete pointers when choosing a route based on activity or surface.

A circular route around the Plumlov Reservoir is suitable for hiking and cycling. The reservoir has sandy and grassy beaches, and boat hire is available on the south shore. Another trail, the Stráž Educational Trail, is suitable for children and pushchairs and has two rest areas and ten information panels. The region therefore offers both active routes and an educational trail specifically suitable for pushchairs.

Winter activities and current conditions

There are small ski areas in Kladky and Malé Hradisko. Their seasonal operation depends on the weather, so check current conditions before travelling. For cross-country skiing, Protivanovsko has two groomed circular trails: the Malé Hradisko Loop and the Protivanov Loop. Cross-country trail operation is also seasonal. Check the current grooming status before setting out.

Wetlands and rare plants

The Hrdibořické ponds, a wetland and peatland area in Prostějov District, are located near Hrdibořice. They provide habitats for birds and amphibians. Rare plants found in the area include potočnice drobnolistá and matizna bahenní. These named animal and plant species make the ponds and peatlands a distinctive nature feature of the destination.

Historic sites and collections

The historic Jantarová stezka (Amber Road) was a trade route for amber between the Baltic Sea and the Mediterranean, passing through Prostějovsko. Historic windmills have been preserved in Suchdol, Hačky and Přemyslovice. The Museum and Gallery in Prostějov is housed in the Renaissance rooms of the former town hall and presents collections on clocks, geology, ethnography, archaeology and Jewish history.

The archaeological collection is the museum’s largest and comprises 300,000 inventory items. These include finds from the La Tène-period site of Staré Hradisko, considered the most important Celtic hillfort in Moravia. A visit to the museum brings together a range of subjects, from archaeological finds to the history and collections of the town.

Traditions, local products and finding a hotel

Local traditions include hody (traditional feasts), bear processions, the burial of the bass, Easter whips and Christmas customs. A cheese producer in Otinoves makes Niva cheese, and sugar is produced at the Vrbátky sugar factory. These examples complement the landscape and culture with regional customs and products.

Facilities at the Plumlov Reservoir include a campsite, motorest or hotel accommodation, guarded parking and snack stands. Before travelling, check which facilities and seasonal services are available.
