Hacky combines traces of cultural history with its location on a high plateau. Music, sacred architecture, a rich windmill history and a cycling tradition offer different starting points for planning a trip. As you consider what you would like to focus your stay on, you can choose between cultural themes and the landscape: the local features range from a composer and a chapel to views and the annual start of the cycling season.

Music, Architectural History and Crafts

Composer Antonín Žváček, who was born in Hacky, composed around 500 works, mainly polkas and waltzes. These principal genres place his work in dance music and offer a concrete insight into the musical side of the town’s history. If you are interested in musical traditions, Žváček’s biography—with its large body of work and clearly identified specialties—offers a starting point.

The Chapel of the Virgin Mary was built in the town center in 1927. Above its entrance is a fresco depicting Saints Cyril and Methodius. The year of construction and the image are two different ways to understand the building: one places the chapel in time, while the other identifies the depiction above the entrance.

Weaving is also part of local craft history: Kanafase and Barchete fabrics were woven in Hacky. These two names add textile work to the cultural heritage alongside music and architecture.

The history of the wooden windmill includes a fire and a reconstruction: in 1914, the earlier mill burned to the ground; in 1923, a new one was built on the same site. The windmill’s rotor is 7 m in diameter and has six wooden sails. The dates distinguish the loss of the earlier building from the construction of its successor; the measurements and number of sails give a concrete sense of its design.

The windmill is privately owned, used as a residence and not open to the public. Do not plan an interior visit. This restriction is important to bear in mind if you include the building in your travel plans.

High Plateau, Views and Cycling Season

Hacky lies on a high plateau in the northeastern part of the Drahanská vrchovina highlands. To the north, the village is sheltered by Březina Forest and the 562 m-high Na skalách mountain. From Hacky, there are sweeping views across the landscape towards Velký Kosíř. Both the village’s location on the plateau and the direction of the distant views are part of the landscape described here.

The “Za větrnými mlýny okolo Konice” cycling route passes through Hacky. One of its three windmill stops is the local windmill. The route thus connects Hacky to a regional trail whose stops are linked to windmills; its significance for route planning should be distinguished from the limited access to the privately owned mill.

The annual traditional “otvírání silnic” marks the start of the cycling season. Hacky is the destination of the first group ride after winter. Unlike the cycling route, this event focuses on a communal start to the season. If you would like to plan your trip around the event, check the date for the current year.
