Smrzice: Church Architecture, Local History and Outdoor Activities
Accommodation in Smrzice
Smrzice offers a range of things to explore for visitors interested in architectural history or outdoor activities. These include a church with a detailed history of its construction and consecration, a Baroque rectory with seasonal exhibitions, and sports and walking routes. If you’re looking for a hotel in Smrzice, start by considering what matters most to you: would you like to include historic buildings and memorials in your travel plans, or are outdoor activities your main focus?
Church and Rectory
The Church of St Peter and St Paul (Kostel sv. Petra a Pavla) was built from 1854 to 1860 and consecrated on 6 October 1861 by Rudolf Freiherr von Thyssebaart, Auxiliary Bishop of Olomouc. Its interior is 42 metres long, 14 metres wide and 19 metres high. Its length is therefore three times its width, while its height adds a vertical dimension to the other two measurements. The church offers an opportunity to consider both historical dates and specific details of its interior.
The Baroque rectory in Smrzice was built in 1761 by parish priest Vogl on the site of an old demolished building and is the oldest building in the municipality. The municipality uses it for Easter and Christmas exhibitions. As dates may vary, check the specific exhibition date in advance if you plan to visit.
Wayside Shrine and Memorial Plaques
In front of the Sokolovna in Smrzice stands a Boží muka wayside shrine dating from the first half of the 18th century. It is considered the oldest in the Prostějov District (Okres Prostějov). There are also three memorial plaques in Smrzice commemorating people from the municipality: Jakub Kresy, Jaroslav Kubíček and the editor Josef Kotek. The shrine and plaques offer different points of reference for local history: a historic object on the one hand, and the names of people remembered here on the other.
Sports, Cycling and Walking Routes
The sports and community complex in Smrzice has a court with an artificial surface for tennis, small-sided football and nohejbal (a Czech ball sport). If you plan to take part in one of these sports, check the facility’s current details before visiting, as they may change.
The 25th edition of the Smržická šlapka cycling event, held on Saturday, 2 September 2023, offered both off-road and road routes. This information applies to that edition of the event.
The Naučná a poutní stezka (educational and pilgrimage trail) to Stráž is 3.6 kilometres long. It leads from the centre of the municipality to Stráž and back to the final station, and is marked with a green KČT trail marker. Check trail conditions before setting out. The trail and the cycling event differ in terms of navigation: the trail’s length, route and markings are given, while for the specified edition of the event, the two types of route are noted.
Dates to Bear in Mind When Planning Your Trip
The construction dates and year of consecration are historical facts; dates for the Easter and Christmas exhibitions may vary, while the cycling event information refers to a specific edition in 2023. If you’re planning your trip around an exhibition or a hike, take the relevant date or trail conditions into account.
