Hrdibořice: Pond Landscape, Rare Species and Tradition
Accommodation in Hrdibořice
Hrdibořice has a strong connection to nature through the Hrdibořické rybníky; a fishing area and local cultural themes also offer further insights into the town. These provide different focal points when choosing a place to stay: protected marsh meadows and species, fishing with views of waterbirds, and a historic building alongside a community tradition.
Nature Monument and Pond Landscape
The Hrdibořické rybníky are a national nature monument. The area was designated in 1990 to protect marsh meadows with rare plant and animal species. Both the marsh-meadow habitat and the species it supports are therefore central to its protection. The landscape should not, then, be reduced to open water alone.
The area includes Velký rybník, Malý rybník and four smaller ponds created through peat extraction. The four smaller bodies of water complement the two named ponds and add their own history of formation to the description of the pond landscape.
The Hrdibořické rybníky are home to one of just two populations of Matizna bahenní in Czechia. Birdlife is also part of the natural landscape: 67 bird species have been recorded in the area. Habitats include ponds, wetlands, meadows, copses and woodland. These habitats range from water and wetlands through meadows to copses and woodland; they complement the botanical feature with a varied landscape perspective.
Fishing and Waterbirds
The Blata 3 fishing area in Hrdibořice covers 11.0 ha. It is stocked with carp, tench, bream, Prussian carp, pike and zander. For anglers, the named fishing area, its size and fish stocks offer a specific point of interest. Nature observation is also part of the fishing experience: while fishing, anglers can observe numerous waterbirds in the reed beds and along the banks. Two interests thus come together in this setting, without birdwatching having to be a separate excursion.
On Foot or by Bicycle
The Hrdibořické rybníky can be reached from Vrbátky on foot or by bicycle. The route first follows a paved road and then a well-maintained farm track. The change in surface is a practical point of reference when planning the route. As trail conditions can change, check the condition of the farm track before setting out.
Chapel and Straw Nativity Scene
The Chapel of Saint Florian was built in 1749. According to a report from January 2026, friends join the local community in adding new figures to the Hrdibořice straw nativity scene every year. The report says that Františka Novosadová started the tradition with friends 15 years earlier; Novosadová looks after the local library. The chapel offers a clearly dated historical connection, while the straw nativity scene represents a recurring community tradition. Together, these themes show different facets of local life without implying any specific visiting hours or access conditions.
