Hrubčice – Castle, Churches and Stone Monuments
Accommodation in Hrubčice
Hrubčice is located in the fertile Haná region. For travelers who take historic architecture into account when choosing a destination, the town offers several distinct points of interest: the “Hrubecký zámek” castle, sacred buildings, stone statues and a bell tower. The signposted Bedihošť–Hrubčice cycle path provides an additional focus. If you are considering Hrubčice for a hotel stay, you can assess the town in terms of its architectural heritage and also its connection to a specific cycle path.
The Castle and Its Architectural History
“Hrubecký zámek” was built in the 16th century in the late Renaissance style. Around 1700, the castle was remodeled with Baroque elements; at the same time, a balustraded staircase leading from the park to the upper floor was built. Its history thus encompasses a late Renaissance origin and a later Baroque phase. Compared with St. Urban’s Church, built in 1755 and 1756, the castle dates from a much earlier period. The balustraded staircase adds a specific connection between the park and the upper floor to the building’s chronology.
St. Urban’s Church Outside the Village
The Baroque “Filiální kostel sv. Urbana” church was built in 1755 and 1756 and dedicated to St. Urban. It stands outside the village, with a cemetery surrounding it. Its location is therefore different from that of the bell tower, which stands in the village center. The church’s furnishings include a main altar and three side altars. These are dedicated to St. Barbara, Our Lady of Lourdes, and St. Elizabeth, St. Zacharias and John the Baptist. A stone cross dating from 1857 also stands in front of the church.
Bell Tower, Statues and Crosses
The tall, four-sided bell tower stands in the village center. It was built in 1769 and renovated in 1997. The stone statues of St. Florian and St. John of Nepomuk date from 1736. They originally stood in the village square, on either side of the road; this place was formerly known as “U svatých.” Their former location and the historic name of the square offer a distinct glimpse into the town’s history.
Another stone cross in Hrubčice is about four meters high and dates from 1898. Its niches contain statues of Our Lady of Sorrows, St. Joseph and St. Aloysius Gonzaga. Together with the cross in front of St. Urban’s Church, dated 1857, these are two stone monuments of different ages.
The Chapel and the Cycle Path
The “Kaple sv. Cyrila a Metoděje” chapel was built in 1887 in memory of the settlement’s 100th anniversary and completed a year later. It was consecrated on July 27, 1888. Its construction, completion and consecration mark different stages in its history.
There is also a specific point of interest for cycling travelers: the Bedihošť–Hrubčice cycle path is marked with the vertical traffic signs C8a and C8b. If your travel plans focus more on cycling than on architecture, this named route offers a different way to explore Hrubčice.
