Skalka U Prostějova: Springs, Spa Park and Geology
Accommodation in Skalka U Prostějova
Skalka U Prostějova offers several starting points for planning your trip: Lázně Skalka, local mineral springs, a spa park, educational activities and geological sites. If you are looking for a hotel in Skalka U Prostějova, you can choose the focus of your stay based on local history, outdoor activities or geology. The following sections distinguish these topics according to their specific features—from the chapel and springs to information panels and rock outcrops.
Healing Springs and Local History
The Chapel of St John the Baptist (Kaple sv. Jana Křtitele) was built in 1828; its name is associated with the local healing springs. Lázně Skalka was founded in 1928. The mineral springs used by Lázně Skalka include four named springs: PRAMEN SVATOPLUK, PRAMEN CYRIL A METODĚJ, STUDÁNKA JULINKA and STUDÁNKA JAN. Skalka’s spa park is located on the site of the former Bařisko pond. The chapel, springs and park thus represent different historical and landscape connections to the town. The chapel’s construction and the spa’s founding are exactly one century apart.
Educational Activities and Exercise
In the spa forest, the “Tóny lesa” project includes educational and play features: an educational dendrophone, a memory game and “Strom jako dům.” There are also balance and fitness features, as well as a forest megaphone. The sports facilities at Lázně Skalka include a multi-purpose court and a minigolf course; their availability may change. Before your trip, check whether the installations are in place and the sports facilities are available.
The Pivín–Skalka educational trail was officially opened in August 2019. Its eight information panels cover the history of the municipalities, the surrounding nature and the spa facilities. Veronika Janíková created the trail in collaboration with the municipalities of Pivín and Skalka. Alongside the educational and play features in the spa forest, it offers another thematic experience: information panels covering several aspects of the municipalities and their surroundings.
Geological Sites
Skalka - písky is a large, horseshoe-shaped former quarry. It is 70 metres in diameter, with walls 10 to 12 metres high. The site lies near Lázně Skalka on a marked hiking trail and reveals a unique sequence of Lower Badenian sediments. Its shape, dimensions and sediment sequence give this site a distinct geological profile.
Jezírka Skalka is a geotourism site with a different geological focus: the former small quarries are now filled with water, and greywackes of the Myslejovice Beds emerge from Lower Badenian pelites of the Carpathian Foredeep Basin. At Skalka - písky, the focus is on a large horseshoe-shaped quarry and its sediment sequence; at Jezírka Skalka, it is on flooded small quarries and rock outcrops. Access to Jezírka Skalka is across pathless terrain; take this into account when planning your visit.
