Discover Vitčice: Village History, Monuments and Nature
Accommodation in Vitčice
Vitčice combines a distinctive historic village center with traces of local history and the natural surroundings of Vitčický Forest. The village green, monuments, forest and water offer different points of interest when choosing a destination with cultural and scenic attractions.
Village Green and Local History
The historic center of Vitčice consists of a triangular village green lined with rows of former farmsteads. The shape of the center and its buildings give the village a clearly recognizable historic character: the farmsteads frame the village green, while the chapel with its bell tower stands out as a protected landmark.
The chapel is a defining feature of the village green and combines a visible point of reference in the village landscape with protected architectural heritage. To appreciate Vitčice, it is not just one monument that matters, but also the layout of the historic center and the row of former farmsteads.
Monuments and Local Legends
A hand-carved wooden monument depicting Jesus Christ was erected on Ovčák in 2021. It is five meters tall. From Vitčice, a paved farm track leads to the cross along the northern edge of the forest; the route is suitable for pedestrians and cyclists.
The statue of the Guardian Angel stands at a historic crossroads of important farm tracks. It replaced an earlier wooden statue before 1892. The Vitčice war memorial commemorates those killed in the First World War: it was unveiled in 1922 and extensively reconstructed in 2009. The two monuments represent different historical contexts—the long history of a wayside cross and remembrance of the war.
Near Srbce, by a stream and a crossroads of farm tracks, stands an image of Saints John and Paul. It can still be visited. Another wooden cross in the forest is called “Our Lady in the Forest.” It is associated with an orally transmitted legend about a poacher; the cross stands at one of the highest points in the forest.
The history of Vitčická tvrz is brief but specific: it is first mentioned in 1406, and the last recorded reference to it dates from 1466.
Vitčický Forest, Water and Cycling Route
Vitčický Forest is a nature reserve covering 97.262 hectares. The area was first designated on June 21, 1990. Its protected status and defined area give the forest its own importance in Vitčice’s profile, alongside its monuments.
Vitčický Pond is Vitčice’s largest body of water; amphibians and aquatic insects are found there. The forest and pond offer different points of interest: one is designated as a nature reserve, while the other is characterized by its wildlife. This makes the destination’s natural appeal more specific than simply describing it as a rural setting.
Cycling Route 5084 passes through Vitčice and continues through Vitčický Forest. A lookout tower offering panoramic views was built there in connection with the cycling route.
Tradition in the Events Calendar
“Pytlácká noc” is a long-standing Vitčice tradition held at the festival grounds by the forest. If you would like to plan your trip around this event, check the dates announced each year.
