Stařechovice lies below Velký Kosíř and close to the last foothills of the Drahanská vrchovina. When planning your trip, nature and cultural heritage offer distinct areas of focus. The Brus Nature Monument is located in the village district of Služín; the church, Madonna, archaeological finds and pilgrimage add to the area's historical character. The “Za Josefem Mánesem” hiking trail also leads to the Stařechovice wayside cross, from where you can take a detour into the village to the church. This lets you shape your stay around nature, hiking or local history.

Natural Surroundings Below Velký Kosíř

Brus covers 42 hectares and is a botanical site with woodland and steppe communities. This combines a specific area with a clearly described botanical character. The Velký Kosíř Nature Park extends across the cadastral areas of Stařechovice and Služín. These are different points of reference for understanding the area: Brus is a specific site in the village district of Služín, while the nature park is defined by the two cadastral areas. When comparing the natural attractions, you can distinguish the specific botanical site from the broader park area.

Church, Art and Local History

The Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary was completely rebuilt in 1718 in a restrained Baroque style. Its main altar is dedicated to the Nativity of the Virgin Mary. The building's history identifies its architectural style; the altar dedication indicates its religious significance. Both offer concrete points of interest if you are interested in religious architecture and art history.

A Gothic Madonna from the early 15th century has been preserved in Stařechovice and is considered a monument of exceptional cultural and historical value. The Stařechovice Madonna is made of limewood, measures 114 centimetres and belongs typologically to the group of Madonnas in the so-called Beautiful Style. Numerous archaeological finds have been discovered in Stařechovice, particularly from the Bronze Age. Alongside the medieval artwork, there are also much older records of the area's history.

The church feast day falls on 8 September; the Stařechovice pilgrimage takes place on that day. If you would like to plan your trip around it, check event information in advance, as the arrangements may vary. The Chapel of St Martin also stands in Služín, just below Velký Kosíř.

Plan Your Hike and Journey

The “Za Josefem Mánesem” hiking trail leads to the Stařechovice wayside cross. From there, you can take a detour into the village to the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary. These are two distinct points to consider when planning: first, the wayside cross as the destination on the route described, then the possible detour to the church. This lets you decide whether to include only the named point on the trail or also the walk into the village. Before setting out, check the route and trail signs, as signage and local wayfinding may change.

Stařechovice is served by regular bus routes. Timetables and service levels may change, so check the connection for your travel date. For the bus, the timetable and service are the main planning considerations; for the hike, they are the trail signs and route.
