North Frisia: Wadden Sea, Halligen and Coastal Landscapes
Accommodation in North Frisia
North Frisia has 441 kilometres of coastline. The five North Frisian islands in Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park include Sylt, Föhr and Amrum, among others. North Frisia also includes ten Halligen, which lie within the national park as a distinctive landscape formation. The North Frisian Wadden Sea is an official nature reserve and is part of Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park. The coast, islands, Halligen and Wadden Sea thus offer various starting points for planning your trip.
Experience the Wadden Sea and nature
The Schlüttsiel Information Centre is a place to learn about nature. It has a natural history exhibition and offers guided tours of the Wadden Sea and nature conservation almost every day. In suitable weather, a guided walk along the sea dike follows. National park information centres in North Frisia also offer exhibitions and events about the national parks and the Wadden Sea World Heritage Site. Visitors can observe a rich variety of birdlife at Hauke-Haien-Koog, for example.
Hallig Südfall is a distinctive landscape. It covers 50 hectares, lies in Zone 1 of the national park and has a largely natural landscape. Südfall can only be visited as part of a guided tour: on guided walks or with the Wadden Sea carriage operators. This access restriction is part of planning a visit.
Excursion boats depart from Schlüttsiel for the Halligen of Oland, Langeneß, Gröde and Hooge, as well as for the seal banks. If you are planning such a trip, check the departure times in advance. The boat destinations and a guided tour of Südfall offer different ways to experience the Wadden Sea.
Explore North Frisia by bike
The Beltringharder Route is 27 kilometres long and starts in Lüttmoorsiel. The Stollberg-Koog Tour is 35 kilometres long and starts in Reußenköge at the Amsinck House. The length and starting point give you two concrete points of comparison when choosing between the tours. The North Sea Cycle Route passes through North Frisia and is part of the “North Sea Cycle Route”. North Frisia can be reached by bike via the international long-distance Grenzroute cycling route.
Another option is the “Eiderstedt Countryside Tour”. It passes through the expansive marshland of North Frisia and offers quiet paths, nature and glimpses of rural life with cows and sheep. The routes therefore differ in the emphasis described: for the two tours mentioned, the length and starting point are clearly stated, while the Eiderstedt Countryside Tour foregrounds the marshland and rural life.
Culture and regional specialities
Culture can also be a focus of your stay. Among Schleswig-Holstein’s districts, North Frisia has the highest concentration of museums and the largest number of listed cultural monuments. Pharisäer is one of the classic regional specialities of northern North Frisia: this drink consists of hot coffee with a shot of rum and a dollop of whipped cream.
Plan your stay
When planning a hotel stay, you can first consider whether you would like to focus on cycling, nature watching, boat trips or culture. The stated route lengths and starting points help you compare the cycling tours; departure times and dates are useful reference points for boat trips and guided tours. If Südfall is on your itinerary, note that access is only possible as part of a guided tour. This way, you can plan each day around the experiences that interest you most in North Frisia.
