Those looking for a hotel in Bohmstedt can also get to know the village through its trails, Haaks Forest and history. Haaks Forest lies on the eastern edge of Bohmstedt, covers about 96 hectares and is a local recreation area. The local history of the forest also includes the founding of the Haaks cooperative forest in 1896. Bohmstedt offers various options for planning a trip: cycling and hiking routes pass through different landscapes, while two historic dates are associated with the North Frisian Association.

Cycling and hiking routes through geest and marshland

The 43-kilometre Söbenbargen Route starts at the village square, Bi de Kass, in Bohmstedt. After Ahrenshöft and Bohmstedt, it passes through the Arlau flood meadows, where you can see how the marshland formed. The route therefore combines a practical itinerary with insights into the landscape.

Other walking and cycling trails follow different routes: one follows the Ostenau past Badekuhle. Another crosses the geest ridge, passes through the Ostenau lowlands to Poddam and returns via Lehmkuhle. One route crosses the Maase marshland to Haaks Forest and returns over the geest ridge. Another passes Drelsdorf Forest and Haaks Forest. Check the signs locally; the Söbenbargen Route leaflet is dated 2021.

Canoeing on the Arlau

The Söbenbargen cycling tour can be combined with a canoe trip on the Arlau. The river is navigable year-round between the Bohmstedt marshland and the Arlau lock. However, water levels and safety conditions can vary seasonally. There are six canoe launch points along this stretch; confirm that they are available before setting off. This lets you include cycling and paddling as separate activities in your plans while also taking the conditions on the water into account.

Forest, marshland and nature

The landscapes along the trails also offer a variety of impressions. Some former gravel pits near Ahrenshöft are now water-filled habitats for animals and plants. One route passes through Söbenbargen, along burial mounds and past the Waldheim inn, before returning to Bohmstedt. Another trail reaches the Deichshörn restaurant, which is associated with homemade cake and North Frisian specialities. Haaks Forest on the eastern edge of the village adds to these landscapes as a local recreation area.

Bohmstedt’s association history

The Bohmstedt Guidelines were announced in 1926 at an annual meeting of the North Frisian Association in Bohmstedt and attracted attention beyond North Frisia. Another connection with the association is Friesentag: on 18 and 19 September 1976, Bohmstedt hosted this heritage festival of the North Frisian Association. The two dates represent different historical milestones: an annual meeting at which the guidelines were announced, and a two-day heritage festival.

Culinary connections

Bohmstedt’s culinary offerings include Paulsen’s Landhotel and Restaurant and the Waldheim inn in Haaks Forest; both are considered places for culinary experiences. The routes to them differ: Waldheim lies on a route that leads back to Bohmstedt, while another trail reaches the Deichshörn restaurant. Deichshörn is associated with homemade cake and North Frisian specialities.
